Bubblegum Crisis (OAV)

Genres: action, science fiction
Themes: cyberpunk, mecha, police, power suits, real robot

Plot Summary: In the near future, Tokyo was left flattened as a result from a great earthquake. A new city, MegaTokyo, was then recreated due in no small part from the aid of a multi-million dollar company, Genom Corp. Genom created and mass-produced biomechanical creatures called Boomers to aid in the restoration of MegaTokyo. When the Boomers began to run out of control, the ADPolice at first tried to stop them, but they proved to be far more difficult to deal with than was first imagined. Under the ever looming Boomer threat, a group of four girls from varying degrees of society banded together. Calling themselves The Knight Sabers, they were the only ones with enough firepower and resourcefullness to defend the fledgling MegaTokyo from Genom and its berserk Boomers.

Episodes 4-8

Years ago, when I was in high school and just learning about anime, I discovered that my local library had anime on VHS. Among the things that were there, were a handful of Bubblegum Crisis VHS. Of course, these being VHS, they'd wear out, so it wasn't that easy to get all of them. In fact, IIRC, the only ones I'd managed to get were 7 and 8 (separate VHS, of course), and I think one of the earlier ones (2 or 3, the one where Linna was helping her friend).

I'd enjoyed what I'd seen, but I'd never gotten a chance to watch all of it. When the BD were coming out, I bought the set, and since my roommate had never seen it, we started watching it. We got through episode 4, but it's been a couple months, so that's where we started tonight.

BGC was a "first" for me in a lot of things. It was the first anime I watched without it being recommended to me. It was the first cyberpunk series I saw. With Daley, it was also the first time I'd ever seen a homosexual character (though I never picked up on it).

Watching it now, there's definitely parts that hold up, and parts that don't. The animation itself is hit or miss, and some of the pacing is very "old fashioned." Some of the character designs (such as the height of Linna's bangs) bother me a bit, too. Well, and Vision looking just like she's out of Gunsmith Cats, thanks to the character designer.

Episode 8 was the first episode I saw, and even now, I still think it's my favorite. I can see, looking back, why I liked Nene so much. I've always been attracted to the smart characters, especially if they're not the best physically, probably because I relate to them. Even all the way back in to watching Care Bears and Sonic the Hedgehog, Bright Heart Raccoon and Tails were my favorites, because they could do cool things with computers or such.

And I like Lisa, too. There's just something about her chasing her dreams (yeah, pun intended) that appeals to me, too.

Has anyone come up with an explanation (other than character designer preference) as to why the hard suits have high heels? These same suit designs were carried over into Bubblegum Crisis 2040 even though the characters were redesigned

My best guess would be that it's a combination of multiple reasons:

1) It gives them more height (which, yes, could be done by platforms and not specifically high heels), and could both help them with leverage in a fight, as well as disguise their identities.

2) By having high heels, and to the extreme that is done in their hardsuits, it makes the footprint much smaller, and less human. Perhaps to (at least at first) blur the line of if they're human or boomer?

3) Pure aesthetic. They don't need boobs on the hardsuits, either (boob-plate armor is MORE dangerous than a solid breastplate), but, you know, a woman has to look good.

I think that to some extent it was to emphasize the sleek streamlined nature of the suits, especially in contrast to the military suits that were very clunky. Actually, except when transformed, the boomers were made to look as human as possible. I think the streamlined look along with the helmets were intended to emphasize the difference from both boomers and from non-suited humans.

On the other hand, I think the fact that you can see a distinct separation between forefoot and heel is purely aesthetic.

Nene says as much in the scene at the military base gate. Laughing

Boob armor is probably not a good idea against swords and similar weapons. I doubt that this was ever tried out in the field though. It would give the weapon a purchase place. Of course the same applies to the spikes and other extensions they draw on male armor. In BGC they are mostly up against bullets and similar projectile weapons. In that case the more curved surface the better. This would deflect bullets instead of having to absorb the full force of the hit.

In any armor, the joints are weak points, because they must be flexible enough to bend under movement. The ankle is one of the more plausible joints to eliminate, because it's possible to train a person to walk on tiptoe. The suit designers decided that eliminating the ankle joint was worth making the users learn how to move on tiptoe.

I remember when these first came out in hard shell VHS cases. I owned a few in high school and they were expensive treasures. I haven't seen them for decades, think I should track this series down!

So... I finished Crisis, AD Police, and Crash. Is 2032 worth my time?

Do you mean 2040? 2040 is an alternate universe, not related to any of the earlier OAV series.

2032 is the time line of the original OAV series. This may be an odd way of referring to that. On the other hand he may be asking about the BGC 2040. Either way, I would say the answer is yes!

@louis6578

Bubblegum Crisis 2040 is a retelling of the original story. It has the same characters as the original OVA series in the same situation but is told from a different viewpoint. Character designs are changed but the hard suits remain the same. The music is not as good as in the original. In my opinion 2040 is an excellent show. It goes in a different direction after the first couple of episodes and some fans of the original don't care for it. However, it is well worth your time.

If what you saw was 2040, then there is no question, the original OVA series is excellent.

I couldn't watch 2040. My favorite character was in-name-only, and I refused to go any further once I learned that.

I enjoyed both myself. I will say 2040, despite keeping the techno cyber punk feel alive in the series, I felt was....darker. A bit more moody and melancholic than the original. Then again it was produced is an entirely different decade so things change. For me the biggest change that I had a hard time adjusting to was the change in personality of Priss. She was just so much more moody and withdrawn in 2040 compared to the original. At least I felt she was. I have to say do agree though Alan I think the original has the better music.

As for the aesthetic aspects of the armor suits....hey at least they are FULL armor suits and not some mid-drif belly exposed g string riding "armor" suit like many shows would go. I can live with the heels lol. On another aesthetic topic I have to say the BluRay version does look pretty damn good. Time to get rid of the old bootleg vhs tapes lol.

Lets see, I bought the full set of VHS tapes within the first four to six months of getting into anime. I bought the Y2K authored DVDs when they came out. Those were the ones in CD jewel Cases with no case art. When AnimEigo posted artwork for DVD cases I printed that out and replaced the jewel cases. When they came out with the boxed revised DVDs I bought those. I skipped the single version of that sold at Best Buy but did buy the music video volume. And now I have the Bluray version.

I also think I'm on my third version of BGC 2040. Of course, I also have Bubblegum Crash, Both AD Police series and Parasite Dolls.

I also have two sets of figures (one with motoslaves and one without) a set of metal miniatures, and posters. I hate to think how much I have invested in this franchise. Shocked

I agree. Except for the first 2 or 3 episodes, Bubblegum Crisis: 2040 is a waste of time.
