I haven't really seen anyone talking about what I consider to be the best anime ever made, so I'm looking around for opinions on those who have seen it.

Well, you might want to add a little information of your own about it. Give us something to work with. May want to edit the post and add a bit more yourself as it may get locked otherwise.
As for my opinion on the series it is definitely one of my favorites, if not the favorite. The series simply has so much going for it. It's not drawn out, it's only 13 episodes but doesn't feel rushed and doesn't feel like it's wasting any time. It develops the characters very effectively and tells its story almost flawlessly. The story itself is also very well thought out and thought provoking, has a good message to it and a lot of depth. Best of all it doesn't rely on fanservice, violence or anything along those lines to try to create appeal, it is what it is and that's a slow paced, well told story.
On top of that there's the artwork, while the animation itself isn't amazing the artwork and detail of the world around them is. Each scene looks like it could easily be framed and hung on a wall as a work of art and appreciated by even the most snobbish collectors. Add to that the beautiful and fitting musical score and it creates a world and atmosphere despite the somewhat lacking quality of the animation itself. It's not without its faults, but the pluses easily overshadow those faults and while the animation isn't great I wouldn't really say it's bad either, but there's certainly better out there.
To me this series is just about everything coming together in such a perfect way. It's not that it's the best in one area, it's that it's great in almost every area. I can see how action fans might hate it, despite the short length it's very slow paced and the first quarter of the series is really just character development and some slice of life storylines. For anyone looking for some depth and quality storytelling though this is definitely a terrific title.

You, first. That's the way we do things around here. If you're going to start a discussion, it's good manners to at least present your own comments and opinions to actually get something started.
If you want add something, let me know so I can unlock this thread and allow you to do so. After that, you all can talk about the series as much as you want.

Streaming on Crunchyroll today, this film shows why this is one of the series' most popular arcs—even if a bit too much was left on the cutting room floor.― One of the most interesting choices that came from adapting Overlord IV is that the series skipped an entire arc—two entire light novels worth of story. This left an odd gap between episodes seven and eight of that series—where we go from Ainz d...
Otaku no Video is an interesting cross-section of what otaku was into at that time.In a sense, that captures the essence of Otaku no Video: a product of its time that remains timeless.― Otaku no Video is a work full of contrasts that remains an endearingly absurd classic. For the modern viewer, Otaku no Video must seem like the consummate product of its time. It is an original video animation or OVA...
Mere mortals can't hope to understand Steam's rationale for what makes a game "inappropriate" for their platform.― Welcome back, folks. I figured the anniversary of my accident would be the toughest part of this week, but it looks like fate had other plans in store. On the other hand, I at least feel encouraged; if I can survive a car, I can survive a lot else. Besides, I have a column to write—some...

Sonic X Shadow Generations is a strong contender for one of the best 3D Sonic experiences― Shadow is so damn cool, guys. There are a lot of positive things I'm going to say about this game, from the narrative to the replay value to the level design. Although nominally an artbook, this might be just as easily described as a collection of folklore.― “Shigeru Mizuki,” translator and scholar Zack Davisson says in his introductory essay, “lived in a vibrant fantasy world where every tree, every blade of grass was infused with spiritual energy.” If any one thing comes through in this collection of Mizuki's artwork, it is this – there's a deeply roote...
