Shouoto is, by far, my favorite mangaka. Saying that I love her artwork would be a huge understatement. She's perhaps one of the only artists whose artwork I actively troll for and I consider myself fortunate to own a couple of her sketches.

That being said, yes, I do agree with you that Shouoto's first volumes are all kinda 'meh'. Not that I really read Shouoto's manga for plot (the artwork on her male subjects alone sell me enough), but I don't think Shouoto's strong point has ever been her plot. Although I enjoyed Kiss from a Rose Princess, the manner in which it was set up was far different than the story it turned out to be.

You ARE fortunate, and I'm jealous! I love her lines.

Reading her work strictly for the plot doesn't always work, though it makes her difficult from a review standpoint. Neither of her previously (English) published series went where they looked like they were going to, and I'm actually enjoying both much more now than I did initially. I really ought to review the midway point volumes, particularly of Kiss of the Rose Princess.

Got this volume just last week and it was such a pleasant surprise to see the color pages in a ShojoBeat book once again. Shouoto sensei's art is gorgeous as it is, even more so in color!

A good review for the first volume. And regarding the weak points mentioned in the review- I think longer than a volume series need to be give time to develop it's introduced characters. Sure there are some series out there which give you an explosive and sizzling start in terms of character development and story both. But I feel that not all shoujo stories can generate that effect due to the premise and topic of the series that needs to be handled in a much softer way. Not like action or mystery stories which can create big impact in 1 vol. only just on the thrill factor.

I personally loved reading the entire vol. Honestly, I picked this vol. up as Aoi on the front cover reminded me of Tomoe from Kamisama Hajimemashita and I just couldn't resist that. But I'm glad to read that his character is so much different than him. And display of Himari's hidden powers as the master of the house via the episode demon visits to her house are definitely looking interesting. Looking forward to see read the other vols.
