I wish they'd done a second season to the anime instead. The live action show has fundamentally changed so many things, including major characterization points, that it's not an adaptation but instead a completely different story that for some strange reason has the same title as the manga and the anime. I know that it's customary for TV dramas not to be faithful adaptations but this one went further than any other I've seen! They rewrote the entire thing from scratch and there's barely anything about it that resembles the source material anymore.
The anime was kind of a fresh air. The animation took time to get used to, but once it started working it worked really well, and the voice actors were all fantastic, breathing life into the characters. Apparently the reason why the anime is so faithful to the manga, as much as it's possible, is that they knew that the live action show would change many things, so they wanted fans of the manga to have at least one faithful adaptation. It's a different story. I don't understand why it even has the same title. I wonder how people who watch the live action series react when they get curious and decide to read the manga, and find that it's nothing like what they expected... The anime had been short-changed with getting only 10 episodes so they had to make many compromises in adapting the manga, but the anime staff did the best they could do. The live action staff apparently decided that the manga wasn't attractive enough for a mainstream audience so they made up a completely new story with new characters and new kind of relationships and conflicts, to make it fit nicely into TV soap stereotypes. |

Looks like they were right considering he liked the live action better. I personally liked the anime a bit more because I hated how Saburo was such a wimp in the live action and im pretty sure I got the soundtrack, but it was pretty good for a drama. |
