So i had this amazing idea about starting like a VoIP (ventrillio, Skype, TS, ICQ, telephone on the computer in simple terms) group and chat on days that people catch there favorite ongoing anime or to chat with some one who find a common interest BUT i got to thinking about it....(now before you keep reading i don't mean to offend anybody or make a generalization but im just basing this off of people I've met) that a lot of people on the internet are creepy (not all) but a lot and i thought if there was an event like this going on and something weird happens it would be a big hassle to deal with the awkwardness and i also took in consideration of the possible age difference so i mean it could be a great idea and a lot of fun of but as they say "few bad apples..." why did i just not keep this to self u ask well....just wanted to see what u guys thought about it i would love more than to talk to other people (I'm a old school kid rather talk than text type etc etc) but I'm pretty sure it wouldn't go over...OH let me give u an example *cough* my good friend xbox live so yea throw in some feed back or you can flame me for um. what ever reason Very Happy

P.S i came out the closet today told my freinds i love anime......they where genuinely surprised Confused

The crux of your issue is right here. You see, that's where these "people" are, on the internet, a place where I could easily be a very intelligent 8 year old girl posing as a 40+ year old male.

No one really knows, and because of this, the internet is open to allowing anyone to express themselves in ways they can't do in real life. I know people who are day-to-day straight laces and head to [bleep] at night to "unwind" (I'll leave it to your imagination).

The "rare" in this context is actually meeting people who are like their virtual counterpart in real life.

I would suggest the following:
-If you're an admin to a group discussion, this means you have authority to disconnect. Use this power.

-Make sure the participants are well aware of the rules and put in writing things that will not be tolerated. Make sure you offer "allowances" to certain topics because people hate being told "rules". They'll push, so be ready to punish.

-Outline a scope of discussion in plenty of time to see if people are interested. Providing feedback is their way to notify you they're interested. You'll be able to spot the nutjobs here, so an invitation may get "lost" in virtual space.

Interesting concept to use VoiP for online conferencing. I know businesses do it often, but didn't know this feature was open to the general public. I always assumed it was a value-add to get people to pay.

If you proceed, let us know how things turn out.

It kind of agree. The internet is sketchy as hell.

You wouldn't have any idea of what you're getting into and as you start possibly feeling more comfortable with the person, you might release some personal information, even if you don't mean to.

You can try it, but I think you are better off sticking around here on these forums to discuss anime instead.

I was actually thinking the same thing the other day. I have one friend who actually watches anime, but he does it once every blue moon; But I watch anime like someone watches "Glee", yah know? Haha, but that's the whole reason I came on here is to try and find people with similar interests in anime to chat to and what have you.

If it ends up working out, let me know! I'd love to join the chats!
Very Happy

Petrified Jello brings a valid point. The internet is a interesting place. Since there is a sense of anonymity, people are more apt to say what truly is on their mind, no matter what it is.

But because of that, you can some really interesting and at times, fascinating topics. But, problem is, once it is said on the internet, your basically inviting anyone in the world to read what you say and in some cases, that is not always something you want to have happen. Does it lead to comedy gold at times? Yes, but with all comedy gold, a situation must be created for that exchange to occur.

I recently did some research on what VOIP entailed, and from a business stand point, it actually really is a cleaver and effective way of communicating. Truthfully, like PJ, I wasn't aware the general public could really use VOIP.

See, although you could technically use it with some friends, but with friends or so, there are various ways to communicate with them. See with businesses, VOIP is great because you can chat to a wide variety of employees and if desired, it's even possible to record conversations in the event of a major idea being brought to topic at hand.

But I also agree with PJ's suggestions, especially the rules. To make a point that you mean what you say (in terms of rules) you really have to make a firm stance, even if people say it's not cool to do.

It's an interesting concept, could make a interesting story if it works out.

I think you're better off using a chatroom (im pretty sure vent has one as well) before jumping right into voice chat.

Less personal and it can reduce the creepiness, imo.

- edit - although I guess it may not be bad using Vent if you knew everyone was from ANN.

"Didn't know it was open to the general public"... really? PC gamers for example have been using voice over IP for at least a decade now. Teamspeak, Ventrilo, Mumble just to name a few. There are options aplenty and many of them are free of cost.

As for your problem with creepy people, well... someone creeps you out - they get the boot. Removing and banning people is very easy.
