I remember reading this when Viz first published it.
I gotta be honest; it bored me completely. I don't think it was bad, but it just isn't for me. |

I was really struck by Matsumoto's ability to evoke pareidolia with this, the way I could look at a scene and see hints of faces in everything - a twisted sort of animism making the whole world look vaguely sinister if not hostile, but at the same time remaining ambiguous enough that I could dismiss it as just a trick of the eyes.
That sort of confused perception helped me identify with both sets of characters - normally I'd want to identify which of them (if any) was perceiving "the truth" of the events and try to figure out what the truth was; here I was happy being able to see things from both perspectives and understand each of them even if I'm still not entirely sure I understand the world they live in. |

Considering how much I absolutely loved Ping Pong, I would love to give more of this guy's stuff a shot.

bob: I've asked, and Viz is stubborn about publishing Ping Pong here, for some reason.

I really need to reread this book. Viz did an amazing job with the release. I love the red-trimmed pages.
I remember the last act being really impressive with how Matsumoto recreated the effect of being able to just slightly make out images in the dark. I can see this being too artsy for some. I think there's a two-page spread in there that's just the same panel redrawn 6 times. Sunny's a more accessible alternative, and my favorite work of his that I've read so far. It breaks my heart a little bit every chapter. Viz is giving that series a nice hardcover treatment too. |
