I'm waiting for the series to end before start watching it. I just hope he's not destroying his own creation like some people are leading me to believe.
On another note, I was expecting some cranky old man comments. But it's good to know that he's not labeling the director of AoT and actually sees how good he is. He did make Death Note after all and did have some involvement in Black Lagoon.
EDIT: I guess I should have picked up on yet another Tomino crank. If he thinks that no one walks into anime with a professional attitude anymore, he's proving to be an arrogant pr*ck.
This makes me more worried about Reconguista in G, did he make it because he had a good story to tell that would be a welcomed entry in the Gundam series, or did he make it solely to make a statement and have it shoved down our throats?

This is an attitude that really pisses me off. I don't know what the reaction to G Recon has been, but the "you couldn't do this, so don't complain" attitude is just a cop-out. No, we couldn't do this, because we're not trained to do it. It's the same as the stuff going on with obviously unfinished games being released. This isn't something like a volunteer-run event, where joining the staff is a good way to try to improve/change things. This is a professional-level production, and I don't think that an attitude of "we're professionals and you're not" is any way to address your fans.

I thought this line was cute. It reminds me of Michael Keaton's monologue in "Birdman".

I can see where you would be angry from reading that, but I think he means that most anime viewers have no clue how complex the animation process is. They don't see the months of labor it takes to come up with the character designs, the script and storyboards, nor the hours of labor that it takes to make hand painted backgrounds or draw the thousands of sheets of douga and genga used to animate each episode. Even though animation has switched to CG, many studios still produce hand drawn backgrounds and sketches to scan into the computer.
If Tomino wants to make it so that anime fans appreciate their work, perhaps taking them on an inside tour of the complexity of the animation process would be more beneficial. Show them how much labor goes into each handpainted background, and mention that each 30 minute episode has about 250 of these.

I agree a 100% with you. This attitude is unacceptable no matter the craft. Computers are nowadays millions of times more complex than 20 years ago, same can be said about programs (games and otherwise) written for them. But bad hardware or software are just that, even if "you couldn't do this"
The other problem is when "He admits that parts of the show may be difficult for the target audience — kids — to follow, but thinks that when they grow older, they can rewatch and understand. " That is another cop-out. Pixar movies have been wildly popular because they work on both levels, there is an story that kids can understand, but there are parts of it that only adults can fully understand. He fails at doing something that can be enjoyed at both levels, better know your limitations and next time Tomino should either do a kids show or a show for adults.

Even in anime, there are popular series that cater to adults and kids at the same time. Sounds like just another excuse from him because he failed to actually hit his target audience.
I really hope he can turn it around, but G-Reco is a train wreck so far imo. I'm a huge fan of 3 out of 4 of his other series, but I'm not seeing much at all redeemable about this one.

Dessa, I absolutely agree with you. The whole notion of "you couldn't do as well or better, so don't complain" is just an excuse for people who have stuffed up to try and deflect criticism. Although it's not just content creators who this; diehard fans use this sort of argument all the time. If creators or their fans really want to defend a work, they should address the substance of what critics are saying rather than belittling people.
As for Gundam Reconguista in G, I dropped it after one pretty dire episode. I swear Tomino is getting worse as a director and a writer (and that's saying something given that he's the one who was behind such "gems" as Garzey's Wing, Brain Powerd and Zeta Gundam).

I actually never watched any Gundam franchise and I only know Tomino for being a grumpy old man. But I heard that Gundam Reconguista disappoints a lot of people (I heard that coming from a Gundam franchise fans too)
Araki is being really professional as he widely accepted critiques from other director. While Tomino, his way of telling the audience that "they can't understand because they don't know how we did it" is completely bull. I don't think audience should know the process of making anime to enjoy watching it. Just like art critiques don't really have to able to paint or make sculpture.
Sure, making anime is hard and the process is a trainwreck. But I think a chef shouldn't brag about how he gathered the ingredients and how complex the cooking process was, instead he should focus on pleasing the tastebud of the customers.

Those kids who are watching it now will rewatch it later and realize they were watching a disasterpiece all along.
An honest recommendation: If you want to introduce your kids to Gundam stick with UC first then many of the AU series save for Gundam Seed Destiny and anything past AGE. Don't start your kids off with most of the recent offerings and maybe tell them to avoid them.

In fact, to be honest I don't think Reconguista is bad actually, it's one of the shows that I've been following this season and I'm enjoying it, but I agree that these arguments Tomino is making are characteristics of grumpy old people that don't understand how the industry and the people in general works anymore (Miyazaki is also another famous anime director who is a lot like that).
I don't think this should take away people from what he made on the past though, the first Gundam series is one of most recognizable icons of anime in the world today and it's a masterpiece (including many of it's sequels such as Zeta Gundam, CCA and Turn A Gundam), several shows he made back then were very good as well, Xabungle is a series that I watched when I was a kid and made a deep impression on me, it's probably one of my favorite TV shows (although for personal/emotional reasons though).

Going to disagree and say that is a horrible idea. Yes First and Zeta are both UC and are the two most popular (though SEED is third and the next few iirc are also AU), but I'm pretty sure that is because of long term gundam fans, not young fans. Cartoon network tried airing First and it bombed with a young western audience that ate up Gundam Wing.
If you wanted to introduce kids to Gundam, the best choice is clearly Gundam Build Fighters. UC series aren't flashy and would be harder to follow. BF is fairly simple with a pretty good cast (considering the simplicity of the plot) and has flashy, well done battles.

I'm loving G-Reco, but Big T, please don't give us a "Let's see YOU do better" argument. I love ya, bud, but that's weak. If it's not doing well, it's not necessarily because "them darn kids don't understand hard work, dontcha know". A lot of terrible shows had a lot of work put into them.

Let's all hate on Tomino again, lets have a smear article thinly disguised as actual news. Reject the old and traditional as much as possible, embrace the new and pointless.
It's so obvious too he's essentially saying that he feels that people don't understand the whole process of actually having to do things the hand drawn way like G-Reco but oh well people are absolutely determined to shit on this guy and frankly I think he has every right to be a little annoyed at this point. Anime fandom has become really stubborn, stupid shallow and kind of just plain awful over the last decade or so.
Also I think it's perfectly reasonable to suggest that people might be able to return to the show at a later date and pick up on things they didn't notice when they were younger. I've found that with most Gundam series in that I've been able to go back with new life experiences and awareness and enjoy them on different levels and notice different things time after time, but then again I don't just go around shrieking trainwreck at everything and expecting everything to conform to some big dumb hype formula like most people do nowadays so pretty big difference there.

Actually, this part is mistranslation.
Original line:放送が始まってからの視聴者の反応は「分かりません。なぜなら見ていないから。見てしまうと仕事ができなくなる」
It says "I [Tomino] don't know the viewer's reaction about Gundam Reconguista because I don't see it. If I see it, I can't do my job".
