Of all the manga I've ever heard about, Summit of the Gods sounds like the one closest to matching my tastes. I may just check it out . . . . . .

I mean this in the absolute politest way possible:

That rather surprises me, given the avatar you use.

I think I'd like to pick this up. I've found it hard to come across "macho" manga that don't reduce themselves to more simplistically macho things, like blood and guts and gratuitous sex. Or that go over the top in their pursuit of manliness (hi there, Fist of the North Star!) And mountain-climbing has to be one of the more unusual subjects I've come across in a manga.

When it comes to novels, there's a whole little subgenre of mountain-climbing books out there (SF author Tani Koshuu has written a number of these, for example). It's not quite such an out-of-left field topic considering the sheer number of mountains Japan has, and how most kids have to climb at least a few easy ones on school outings in junior-senior high.

I like to think real manly men keep a soft spot for cute romances.

I already have first 2 volumes of the manga. It's a good manga, but each volume is like $25 each.

Heh I remember coming across another manga by Jiro and Yumemakura called Garouden, which is a martial arts manga. It's also very very manly, although in the over the top machismo way.

Jiro's career is kind of amazing. Hope "A Zoo in Winter" is covered in the column in the future.

Can anyone provide a picture of the physical books? Seeing what they look like may spur me to pick them up sooner rather than later.

I just picked up v1 today as a bday gift for my brother (partly inspired by this column :) )! Zeguna, I don't have a picture, but it included colour pages and the pages were nice sturdy paperstock. The cover is a matte-finish paperback, with french folds? (I'm having a mental block at the moment but I think that's what it's called, with the cover folded in to create a "dust jacket" appearance.) Looks very nice! And his drawings are so precise and detailed and just amaaaaaazing.

I've always been interested in this manga; tangentially. Since it was written by Yumemakura Baku, who also wrote Garouden. Garouden was turned into a manga by Itagaki Keisuke. Itagaki wrote and drew Baki the Grappler, one of my all time favorite manga. Garouden is one power level below Baki. So I am always interested in works by Baku, but mostly by association.

Here's an older pic that shows them on the shelf.

They're pretty much like lys described: nice looking paperbacks.
