For a limited run and gold plated, $400 doesn't sound too bad. Too bad it's just quartz, even a basic automatic movement from Seiko or Miyota would help justify the price.

From the back of the case back it says quartz. Going by the pictures it's probably a Guess/Fossil watch quality at best that would normally cost you 80-120 dollars at most.
Of course you are paying for the Anime tie in BS for the mark up.
I've said it before no Anime/Manga themed watch is even close to worth what they are asking. It's just a ploy to milk fans of their money.

Yeah, I saw the caseback and fixed my post before you posted. But it's not like anime is alone in mark-up, go to any department store and look at the cheap garbage Michael Kors or Gucci watches, this could at least have some kind of collector's value. And hell, you'd spend much more than $400 to by any of the TV or OVA series on disc.
Besides, all watches have mark-up. As if a Patek Calatrava really needs to cost $28k. As if one of the million Rolexes produced a year really need to start at $8k.

Well don't forget this is Japan, everything is overpriced, so this shouldn't come as a surprise.

Yes of course Swiss watches are marked up but they are considered luxury times pieces or jewelry so people have been tricked into without questioning to pay those prices if they want to own one.
But when it comes to Anime themed/inspired watches just throw some logos and designs that cost nothing extra to do on a cheap base watch and charge 3-4 times what a similar everyday off the shelf watch and rake in the extra profit.
Really any watch just tells time so after a certain price point your buying the name on it or bragging rights. Sure you could love watches and the design but it may cost you a pretty penny in the process.
It's funny they never collaborate with a well known Swiss Company for a tie in watch then maybe I could see the collectors value in paying for such a watch. At least with certain Swiss branded watches they hold their value while most do depreciate.
I can tell you right now a number of those watches just like all the other ones will be on Ebay to be resold at 3-4 times the stupid retail price because of how difficult it is to import one. Then when the limited run is sold out you will have to pay those ridiculous marked up prices or live without one.

Yeah, that's the nature of a limited item, which I think is why this one is so expensive. No idea on the built quality of the watch, it could be janky.
What Swiss brands would even want to collaborate? Who's more out there in terms of design and fashion while still maintaining the luxury status? Watch it be stuffy old Ulysse Nardin.

They could have at least made a correct "IV" numbering instead of "IIII" for Aries for the 400 USD it is going to cost.

That is a convention on some clocks/watches with Roman numerals to distinguish between 4 and 6 more clearly.

Not only that, but it's usually done as an aesthetic balance to add more weight to the right half of the clockface. It's pretty common.

Movado tends to make some unique looking watches. That said, they are usually rather minimalist designs, the exact opposite of this. Omega did collaborations with James Bond. Both those brands sell watches in the $1000's though. I'm surprised Seiko hasn't done any collaborations though, they'd probably be the most logical choice. As for this watch, it's too pricy, but it does look cool. I prefer silver to gold though.
