Um, I guess it was decent. But it once again clashes with the character design IMO. She is basically an emtionless character on the supposed outside except when worried for Eren. Her acting was all over the place in tones, like she was whining then actually feeling dead in her eyes but still having something to say. I might get along with it, but I still stick to my gut that Emily Neves would have been better IMO.

Yup i'm fine with this voice. Glad all the characters i was less fond of don't sound like boring emotionless badasses cause thats what bothered me about Mikasa and Levi when i watched it subbed.

Mikasa is supposed to sound cold, distant and focused. It becomes a plot point later on in the manga. Levi doesn't have such a restriction, and because of this Mikasa's voice ends up being the one dub voice I am really dreading. I LOVED Trina as Mari in the Rebuilds, but she is playing Mikasa way too passionately in this clip.

Keep in mind when this particular clip takes place. Maybe then you'll understand why her acting is "all over the place".

Look at the context of the scene and Mikasa's emotional state.

In pain, looking to drown out said pain through actions. Acting extremely recklessly.

That's exactly how the VA is playing it. Maybe the japanese VA was a little bit more subdued, but the performance works.

I don't know quite what it is, but there seems to be something really off putting about all the dub clips I've seen for this so far - everyone in the cast just seems miscast, and I'm not too certain why right now.

I love the work I have heard from Trina Nishimura, but in this scene her performance is too emotional. Like others have said, Mikasa is mostly cold and seems to only get emotional when it comes to Eren. I do not expect Trina to replicate the performance of the Japanese voice actress, but I hope Ms. Nishimura can adjust her voice according to the situations.

Still, I am happy that Trina is voicing Mikasa, and I am liking the rest of the English cast.

Yeah, way too emotional for our Mikasa. That's what kills you about her. She *should* sound the way Trina portrays her, but she doesn't. She sounds... empty and hollow. She's basically in a suicidal frame of mind in this scene, because of Things. Look at the shot of her eyes which is shown here. Hopefully, we'll see -- or rather hear -- a more typical Mikasa elsewhere.

I enjoyed that. A lot. Even more than the original performance, despite what anyone says about how she should sound. I'm not the only one, but I do feel like I'm in the minority here (using the cesspool that is the YouTube comment section as my source Rolling Eyes )

Coming from a person who prefers dubs, this dub sounds weird. I don't know why but it sounds like Funimation is trying to hard with this dub. It could be that or just the dialogue sounding even worse in English.

Well... Maybe it's because Attack on Titan is this HUGE deal with it's fans. FUNi may be thinking that if they don't "try too hard" that the fans may just tear them a new one (metaphorically speaking). What they may not know is that their dub was gonna cause a stir with fans no matter how good or bad it was regardless of casting or dialog choices Confused Just my 2 cents.

To be fair to Funimation, some of the "dramatic" scenes in Attack on Titan just came off as being laughably hilarious. I imagine those scenes are just going to be cringe worthy hearing them in English.

As for the dub, it seems like sometimes Funimation will dub a show having the voice actors mimicking the way the Japanese seiyuu sound. Baccano being a good example of this, and Madoka being a more recent example, though not done by Funi. Other times, they don't bother with it and just go with whatever. This dub is clearly the latter. While it's difficult to judge a dub from just a few scenes, it's clear what direction Funimation is taking this and I'm not sure it was the right one. Trina Nishimura is a fine voice actress, but as people have said she seems miscast.

Well, we'll just have to wait and see now, won't we? Wink
