Awww... that's kind of disappointing. |

Discotek, the company whose official releases have looked worse than the bootlegs of yesteryear, didn't do its research. I am not surprised.
So the choice is blu-ray today with the censored, "bowdlerized" version or a DVD (?!) with the full version in a year (if ever)? That sucks. |

So instead of fixing the issue at hand, they're going to charge people even more for a piss-poor excuse for a replacement?
"An edited-BD release vs A barebones unedited-DVD release" is what this is boiling down to ultimately. Aren't blu-rays supposed to be update-able? I thought one of the things BDs had going for them was that they could be updated using the end-user's BD player in order to add subtitle tracks, promo material, etc. . . Couldn't that feature add the uncut dub track, or is the video also edited? |

Are you kidding me? We've got all these angry people mocking what is pretty much the best anime licensor out there because they made ONE mistake, and yet when FUNi or Sentai royally fucks things up and people complain we get the "THEY'RE TRYING THEIR BEST YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW HARD IT IS" comments.
Guess what? He didn't say "damn" in that scene like you thought he would. Build a bridge and get over it. |

I know right..... Honestly, I'm grateful to Discotek for giving me the opportunity to own a good quality copy of some of the obscure and older anime series/movie that no one else seems to give a damn about releasing. I proudly retired my poor quality vhs recordings of Samurai Pizza Cats thanks to them... and I no longer have to pussy-foot around my copies of the Unico movies.. ...To say the least, I'd rather have any version released than none at all. |

You really can't blame them when even he of all people didn't know about it. |

Because Sentai, FUNi & Viz are so much better with their cheap packaging (FUNi LEs included) & crammed up discs with various audio & video quality issues.
The sad thing about this is that FUNi was guilty of doing something similar to this since their dub for the Dragon Ball GT bricks and Yu Yu Hakusho BDs had some lines from the TV versions mixed in and there were little to no complaints about those. As for Blue Sub No. 6, there's also the issue of it coming from Bandai Visual since this isn't the first time a rescue release from them had a dub-related issue (See Maiden Japan's first set of Patlabor TV and their sub-only DVDs of Black Magic M-66 & New Dominion Tank Police and we can go even further with BVUSA's DVDs of the first 2 Patlabor movies (sure they were redubbed but the originals not being included is still wrong)) and according to Discotek, they have had to pass on some titles because they weren't allowed to include the dubs for them, it wouldn't surprise me if most of those were BV titles (and it would be very unfortunate for some, like the Devilman OVA, which never got proper DVD releases prior to their licenses expiring). Another thing to note is that there are more BV rescue releases coming soon from FUNi & Sentai including .hack and those Sunrise titles that they picked up so I would worry about most of those, especially if they had TV runs like Cowboy Bebop, Escaflowne, Big O, s-CRY-ed & others. |

That... is actually a good point. Might be a good idea to bring this to their attention. |

If Funimation, Sentai, etc. weren't aware of the variations in Dubs before, well they are now. Especially since this one in particular got past Mr. Sevakis. Anything he masters like this in the future will get a fine toothed going over. Mark Gosdin |

Amazon:
"Blue Submarine No. 6 - The Movie (Toonami Version 2001) - 100 min" "Blue Submarine No. 6 (Special Edition 2003) - 135 min" Even though I own both versions, that still only took me all of maybe 2 minutes to find |

Worse than bootlegs?! How can you say that? I own a few of their releases, and while they're not perfect, they still look a heck of a lot better than most VHS releases or bootleg DVDs I've seen! Plus, this company goes way out of their way to get the highest quality material for their licenses whenever possible, and most of their releases are old stuff from the 70s, 80s, and 90s, so of course there's going to be some issues. This is why they don't dub anything: they're short on cash, so they try to make do with what they have, and it's done well for them so far. Furthermore, you should be happy they're being professional about it and are going to remedy it anyway, and here you guys are acting like they deliberately made a mistake or they just didn't care! If you'd actually take the time to get to know them better and see what they take great pains to put out, you may understand a little better. To those who actually understand their intentions and that this is just an unintended mistake: thanks for understanding and seeing Discotek for what they are: people working in a company that make mistakes on occasion but still try to please the fans anyway. |

While I was a bit annoyed at this at first, the fact is, it's not that big a deal, and Discotek is doing all they can to correct it. I've been very happy with their releases and will continue to support them in the future.

AFAIK the Discotek video is unedited (ergo it'd be the full 135 min version too) - it's the complete English dub that has the Toonami edits. |

I know others have already called you on this, but, the Hell are you harping on about? So their pristine Japanese DVD masters of Fist of the North Star look like bootlegs taped directly off of Fuji TV in the 80s? The first Lupin the 3rd show looks like bootlegs? Captain Harlock looks like it was taped off of the KIKU-TV airing? The FotNS movie etc. etc.? Eh? The only release from them that looked objectively bad was the Project A-Ko release. It indeed looked like garbage on my 40-inch Sony Bravia, but they did the best with all they could get. I am puzzled as to why they pass on titles with dubs that they can't get the clearance to include, although I guess I'm missing something about the business of it. I'll just trust that we haven't been missing out on anything cool...(And, my God, don't say "unfortunate" and "Devilman" in the same sentence... :() I'm proud of Discotek, damn it. They're stand up guys who manage things previously thought impossible in the American anime home video market, despite being a small operation short on cash and understaffed. And they're making an effort to correct this edited dub crap; I'm sure there's a reason they estimated corrected copies won't be out until next year. Meantime, just watch the damn subs. (As an unconditional subbie who only views dubs as curiosities, I am indeed not bothered by this fiasco in the least, and I don't care if they never correct it. I'm not even buying Blue Sub No. 6, but if I did, well there ya go.) As for Discotek, I hope they keep on doing what they've been doing, and I SWEAR TO GOD, I WILL TRY MY DAMNDEST TO BUY ALL THE GO NAGAI CRAP. ESPECIALLY DEVILMAN. |
