There's something truly ironic with this. I'm still rather amused about this though.

Nice to see this.

I remember reading Ender's Game as a short story in Analog, one of the old SF Pulp Magazines, in 1977.

It has come a looong way since then, so has Mr. Card. Smile

they want to promote a live action movie at a COMIKet?...... godamnit, movies and television networks have already crapped all over the "COMIC"-con with their live action drudgery, I dont want to see the same thing happen to japan... maybe if it was an Enders Game manga or comic I could understand, but nooo.

If anyone is wondering who those three people are that the artist drawn, it's Ender, Petra and Valentine respectively.

"According to Ender's Game film marketing producer Yuri Kusataro, 'When I read [Ender's Game], I felt the portrayal of the set-up and the main character were very sympathetic and appealing, like something from an anime. Ender's Game portrays people in a deep way, just like in anime. Hollywood's live action has finally caught up.'"

That's quite the high-handed statement, considering how many terrible anime come out of every year. Laughing

No offense to that guy, but that is quite honestly a very stupid comment.

I'm under the impression this Yuri Kusataro person probably doesn't watch much Hollywood movies beyond the Transformers-type garbage it consistently craps out. They've been producing movies that portray people in "deep" ways looong before anime was even a thing.

Maybe not too often in giant sci-fi settings, but they've done it plenty.

Talk about your fresh water fish jumping into salt water. This has all the potential to go sooo badly wrong. But Disney needs to learn a lesson the hard way it seems. I look forward to the casualty report. Laughing

I always found Card's stance on gays kind of comical considering all the obvious homoerotic subtext in his books, particularly Ender's Game. Great read though

That was kind of my thought process too. The minute I found out about Card's stance on these things, not only was I immensely disappointed (he's not a favorite author of mine, but I do like the Ender books), it also flashed right back to certain scenes in the original book. I was like '...Really?'.

I'm not really interested in the movie as of now, since the commercials at least seem like they've changed something major - spoiler[it looks like Ender knows that he's actually fighting in the war much earlier on] - but I'll still probably see it eventually.

No, I don't believe spoiler[Ender knows]. From what I've heard, the only thing that has changed in that respect is that the audience is let in on the secret from the beginning.

I do find this promotion to be interesting and I like the look of the drawings. I would like to see a manga and/or anime for the series, if done right.

As far as Card's personal views go, it is a little hard to separate him from his work, but I think it is necessary. I think groups calling for a boycott of the film isn't really called for. It punishes too many other people and robs people of the experience of a great story. Card is slowly starting to look like an old reformed racist to me. He said some really stupid crap years ago and pushed against homosexuality, especially same-sex marriage, but now that the laws and society are changing he is also changing a bit and being forced to deal with the times. I think Harrison Ford said it best: "I am aware of his statements admitting that the question of gay marriage is a battle that he lost and he admits that he lost it. I think we all know that we've all won. That humanity has won. And I think that's the end of the story."

And on that note, I would be very amused to see some Ender x Bean yaoi doujinshi and Card's reaction to it....

To be quite honest, I didn't really like the original novel to begin with. It wasn't terrible or anything, but there isn't a single aspect that stood out to me as notable. To me, it's just generic sci-fi with a bunch of unrealistic characters that I don't really care for.

And Card's own homophobic views just add more fuel to the "why I don't care for Ender's Game" fire. Perhaps I'll torrent the movie at some point, but it isn't a priority for me to see in theaters or even pay for legally.
