Most anime girls are weaklings, both those made for a male audience, and those made for a female audience. The shoujo dramatic heroines, for instance.
In action/adventures, the main characters are almost always boys/men despite all the (supposedly) enormous female fandom of adventure series.

Is it just me, or girls (fans) don't really like strong, adventurous female main characters, for example in adventure/action series?

Simply put, no not really. Yes, there is a percentage (I doubt that it is "very very large") of female viewers of shounen anime but, like the name implies, shounen anime are mainly targetted at males. Shoujo anime is what most female anime viewers watch, as it is "a demographic indicator for anime and manga aimed at girls." (ANN Lexicon).

And series like Escaflowne, Ayashi no Ceres and Angel Sanctuary do not count, because it's the guys that do all the action. the girls sit there with their problems (it's that a little, anti-feminist?).

Actually, in Escaflowne, if you were to do a tally Hitomi rescues Van pretty much just as often as he rescues her. It's just that she does it with her sixth-sense predictions instead of a Guymelf, and she's actually rather proactive throughout the whole situation in trying to help Van and her new friends, especially in the second half of the series when she's starting to get a little more comfortable with her surroundings and understand the situation more.

I've noticed this, and I completely 100% agree, I would LOVE to see a girl as the main character in a good adventure and/or fantasy series.

The only ones that seems to come to mind right now are Twelve Kingdoms, and Grenadier... considering Twelve Kingdoms is one of my all-time favorites, I'd say it has quite a bit of potential. Wink

To be honest, finding a stand-alone main girl character is pretty rare in nearly any anime that has action in it. Nearly every time she's part of some posse, even in Blood+, with as close to a stand alone female character as I can think of, she doesn't really take care of herself and Hagi is ALWAYS there Mad big letdown in my opinion

There's also Kino's Journey, although Kino doesn't exactly seem like a girl at first glance. I'm pretty sure it appeals to both male and female audiences, although if by "girl" you mean the Mahou Shoujo/Yu Watase/"I love him he loves her she loves him and him" fans, then it probably wouldn't appeal so much to them.

300th Post. [EDIT] No, actually, 301. My 300th was in the Haruhi thread. I missed it.

I'd also love to see more adventure with a female protagonist. Not only do I think it's great, but I love finding series with atypical female characters to show my daughter.

*Kind of* on the topic of female viewers of shonen: I've read several times that in manga at least, Shonen Jump is the most popular manga anthology with female readers in Japan. I know that doesn't cover any place but Japan or any media but manga, however, it's still fairly interesting.

Well, I'm not sure if it'd work in Japan but if I ever become a graphic novelist I'd definetly make a shonen-esque series with a female protagonist. There are quite a few female adventure fans out there, (myself being one) so it's not exactly a hard-to-find audience.

And if anyone's curious, I have character designs for the aforementioned series here: (forgive the shameless plug. Anime catgrin + sweatdrop )

I think, due to the overwhelming success I've viewed for Chrno Crusade among my female acquaintances, the answer is "yes". Though, it could just be that, from what I've seen (very little), Chrno Crusade is the s--t.

When shonen adventure series have a female as the main character, she usually just exists for fanservice. I'm not big on action/adventure anime one way or the other, so I don't really care. I don't even like shoujo adventures like Kyou Kara Maoh that much.

And isn't there a manga called Claymore that stars a girl under Viz's Shonen Jump Advance line?

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Slayers yet: it's an obvious example of a shonen adventure series that has a female lead and definitely not a "oh no, somebody save me!" lead either. From what I understand, Slayers is about equally popular with both genders.

Yeah, Slayers was a great anime. I loved every minute of it, and I was watching the dub.

Anyway, Hayao Miyazaki's anime movies usually have a female lead character. I know not all of them are adventure, but one's like Spirited Away, or My neighbor Totoro have alot of adventuring. Esp Spirited Away, that was full of adventure, and it's my favorite movie in existence.

Oh yeah, and I forgot Nausicaa. It's a movie too, but it has a pretty long manga with a female as the main character. It's more or less an epic adventure story.

Edit: Nice pics Dranxis. Those are good designs, and with a little more detail you'd have some great looking characters there. I especially liked that dino-bird (forgot what they called them, and I used to be so into dinosaurs Anime cry).

As far as i am concerned it would be allright to have a dventure series with a girl as the lead character. If the series was well written with interesting characters and plot elements, then in that case i think it could work out.

I have no clue what world the OP is living in. While a completely standalone female protagonist is uncomon, that goes for most sheries out there simply because a story usually needs a supporting cast. Lately seems like almost everything has female leads. Looking at my desktop:

Shakugan No Shana
Mai-Otome/Hime
Simoun
Blood +
Elfen Lied
Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha
Ergo Proxy (Close call here but Real gets every bit as much screentime as Vincent and eaily edges him out during the earlier episodes.)

Even the shows with defined male leads have females at co-stars much mor ethan just support. (Fate/Stay Night, Black lagoon) Not to mention that just about every none action title has female leads as well. If anything its guys who are the underrepresented minority in anime these days. (Well thatt may be pushing it, but you get the idea. Thank god for Kyon bat-master Keichi)

There is also Ghost in the Shell. The Female lead in there is pretty kick butt,no?
And Kino's Journey too.She may look like a boy but, yes, she is actually a girl. And she is a great sharp shooter mind you.
