Someone told me that the first episode of the series "Gungrave" started near the end of the series and would ruin the whole series for me, while episode 2 would fit better as episode 1. Can someone confirm this for me, I'm a little confused...

It didn't ruin the series for me. It left me a little confused at first (I saw it on Tech TV, not on DVD), but once I got what was going on, I enjoyed it very much.
The "beginning" did not ruin the "ending." For me at least. |

It doesn't ruin the ending the same as berserk's first episode(which is kind of like the final episode...in a way) doesn't ruin it. They both introduce spoilers, but since you don't know the characters or any of the circumstances, it doesn't matter. After a friend and I watched all of Berserk, we watched part of the first episode again to make sense of what happened in it. The first Gungrave episode fits in better around the end of the series; i.e. it fits right into the timeline later on. I'd say go ahead and watch it in normal order, that's how the creators made it and with an anime as amazingly brilliant as Gungrave, who is to say they are wrong.

The fact that it was put at the beginning indicates that it's meant to be watched in that order. There are no real spoilers, in that nothing you see makes any story sense whatsoever until about ep 16

I actually thought The firt episode (and all the connected storyline to that) was unnecessary. I thought the story would have been great without all of it. I mean the story is just so great, and I almost felt like it was ruined by the "new" storyline that comes in.
((yeah, I'm trying not to add any spoilers)). However the anime was still great, and I enjoyed it. There is nothing that is going to totally ruin the anime, but it will leave you with a sense of awe throughout most of the story, and perhaps a little confusion. |

To the post, to me the first episode does not spoil anything. To me the episode just sucks and is confusing.
Tony K.: I read some of your earlier lengthy posts. And to not make this lenghty or to spoil anything I will tell you what I thought the whole gist of it was. spoiler[It was all about loyalty, its essence, what it means and the binds that hold people together. And when I say this, I mean the loyalty of only one man.] [edit]I hear people alot complaining that gungrave is geneon and therefore expensive, well I was just browsing rightstuf and its on Weekly Special box set $49.99, just giving a heads up for all who are thrifty like me[/edit] |

It's just only a preview. You can see that it already jumped in to last episode. The next storyline, Brandon Heat relate his history before he became the Gungrave.
It did not distract the whole episode. If you understand it. |

I understand your points (after readind about 3 different topics from you one link), however, I think the end was almost justified by the way it did end. I was refering to the whole spoiler[group of people that all change into these monsters... I mean even the zombies weren't sooooooo bad (ok, they were...), but the end where he is killing bob and all the other people like him... I mean comeon... that was the worst! Watching bob turn into a flying helicopter of stupidity was so lame, and the action resembled a videogame, only that I wasn't playing and watching someone else play... that for me was the worst part...]
Well that was pretty obvious, since the whole series is about trust, the iron law, and family. spoiler[The bonds of family vs the bonds of friendship. In which he decides that the only way to be loyal to eachother and stay loyal to "the family" is to "set eachother free," which also complies with the Iron law, which states that they must die anyways.] |

Long story made short, the order doesn't matter because you won't understand what stuff in the first episode mean until the story begins to unfold later in the series. |

Silversurfer, you do realize this IS based off a game? If they didn't have the ending like that, there would have been no point to make it after the game.

spoiler[I view the anime as having three parts. The first is the flashbacks, which are amazing. The second is the arc immediately after Brandon's rebirth, which consists of him killing his old comrades. It sucks. The final one is the last few episodes, which are the best part of the whole series. The last episode was...wow. It's up there with Bebop, in my opinion. ]
So, yeah. After the flashbacks end, it starts to suck. At the end, though, it surpasses its earlier brilliance. If only the horrid episodes after the flashbacks end but before the last few were altered, it would be in my top three favorite anime. |

I love Gungrave but does anybody else feel it would have been ebtter without the supernatural element. I liked it best when it was just mafia style.

Well, how else would have Brandon have come back from the dead if not for the "supernatural element." If you're going to take revenge on the people who killed you, you have to have supernatural elements. |

I agree that the first half of Gungrave, without the supernatural element was utterly amazing. The second half is still good, but I feel that it somehow took apart the feel of their relationship of Brandon and the other Mafia guys. But yea, since he died, the only way to finish up would be supernaturally. Had they not killed him, but outcasted him, it would've been a nice finish without the supernatural stuff. |
