It is not a joke. A Death Note anime is scheduled to air late 2006. I doubt there is much info out about it right now other than the fact that it exists, but there will probably be more information about it in the near future.

Here's the ANN news article on it:

Yeah, I think it has to air in Japan first, though.

I think an anime would be boring, because there isn't a lot of action in the manga. I love the Cromartie High manga, but I thought the anime was boring because there's really not a lot going on motion wise in either manga, so what's the point of "animating" it. The humor in Cromartie's or suspense in Death Note's case is pretty much predicated by LANGUAGE or the situations they are in, not the art, which is not that great in either book, especially Cromartie.

Hrrm, Cromartie is an interesting one to compare to. Talk about apples and oranges.

Anyway, I disagree. I think a DN-anime will be very good as long as the acting is on point and they keep it very close with the original story. Yes action scenes are few and far between, and you're gonna be reading lots and lots of subtitles, but how they draw the shinigami and how the more humorous scenes go over make me curious.... so I'll definitely check it out when the time comes.

There are plenty of good suspense things out there. Look at the the show Lost that was built on suspence, and its considered an all time great.

I highly doubt that the masses of dialogue would be boring to someone viewing Death Note for the first time, although it might get pretty dull if you've already read the manga.

Fight sequences are hardly required for an anime to be either popular or good. Just look at Monster.

Death Note could be one of the best shows ever if they do it right.
