As mentioned in a previous thread.

There's a slight difference between Letterbox widescreen, and Anamorphic widescreen. Series such as New Fist of the North Star and Saikano have Letterbox, in where the black bars are encoded as part of the video, so you'd still get those black bars on playback on a widescreen TV, or even if you've set your DVD player to play things back at fullscreen.

Anamoprhic Widescreen is the name given to video that is meant for playback on widescreen TV> On a normal TV, the picture will be streched from top to bottom, but you can choose to squish it to it's original aspect ratio by having black bars added to the top and bottom.

Anyway, I think that this should be a standard for just about everything these days. It certianly has it's benefits (more video, duh) and well... shouldn't cost that much more to utilize over normal standard 4:3 ratio things.

Although I found it slightly annoying to see the Saikano tv series with black bars on all four sides I found it unexcusable that the newly released OAV also shares this problem. Why did Viz do this? I agree that "this should be standard for just about everything these days." Do they lack the technology to present a 16:9 image on my 16:9 screen or does it cost more to do? Are there any other titles that have this problem and are 4:3 letterboxed as opposed to 16:9 anamorphic, so I could avoid buying them? I find the whole situation rather unexcusable.

To be fair, both Saikano TV and FOTNS OVAs were produced at 16:9 matted on their region 2 release. So it might have been the fault of the producers, wanting to keep consistiency or sve a few bucks, rather than Viz doing a matted release. Matted releases still unfortunantly happen where, from what I can assume, someone assumed that it was either the 'intended aspect' or they dont think it'd sell enough to justify having anamorphic prints/masters produced. Justice League Season 2's set, which was animated to be anamorphic (and had single anamorphic DVDs like Star Crossed produced in both 4x3 and Anamorphic), is going to be released matted.

I doubt this sort of mindset will change until next generation formats come out. It's a huge shame but not much can be done.

Most Widescreen TVs have the option to just "Zoom" in which cuts out the black bars. I don't really mind, but I guess it does suck if you watch anime with subs because since it zooms, it cuts out some of the text, but the picture is clear.

I do agree that all titles should contain anamorphic widecreen if the show is not Fullscreen, but I don't letterbox is that huge of a problem or disrupts the pleasure of certain series.

It really isn't. Things you'd normally wouldn't notice, such as edge enchangement or pixelization or whatnot are somewhat magnified.

Doesn't that depend on the quality of the TV? I know my laptop does a pretty good job and maybe you can notice the slight pixelizations if you sit hella close to the TV.

Ultimatly, it depends on the source. When zooming in my Season 1 of Jusice League (the TV I have is 42 inches), it comes with occasionally jaggy edges and what not. I guess it ultimatly depends on the source and whether or not you can notice it.

I guess in the end, your personal preference dictates what is and isn't good for you, but making matted releases doesn't please anyone.

I highly agree with you on that. I just haven't come across a title where I have noticed a drop in the quality of the video when zooming in, but I know that doesn't mean that all DVDs are going to be like this. Liek you said, it depends on the source.

My zoom (on the XBR1) overshoots by a small margin. The Saikano discs are clear enough to not be distracting, but would be considered a poor DVD image. Just to clear things up, the letterbox issue isn't bad enough to not make me buy a series I like. It is annoying enough for me to not purchase a series I've never heard of before, or feel neutral about. I find it more of a dissapointment that a "stereo" dvd being mono, which happens often, but not as bad as buying a dub only dvd. Since I buy almost all of my DVDs online sometimes the web shops fail to mention all of these minor facts, especially since 90%+ off my DVDs are pre-orders. Thanks Steven for the FOTNS warning, since it is one of those shows (not liking the original too much) that I didn't rush out and buy, but might have considered getting on sale.
