Like no matter what if you like manga. I'd say everyone who likes manga should read Death Note. The story is top- notch and it makes you want to keep reading and reading more. Definately a must read full of suspense.

I dont know.
Wouldn`t it give the people, not exactly affiliated with manga, the impression that japanese comics are all about supernatural stuff with strange ghost-like stories and general "fantasy" plots? No, I would much rather they read something emotionaly destroying. That would convince them that manga can operatre on various levels of story development, from the most hilarious, antics filled comedy series to the serious, for example, drama stories they just read. I great example would be Helter Skelter, or The Believers. Those are really hardcore. Maybe they would open the eyes of certain people.

Genshiken. There isn't any direction with the story, or so it seems so far, but it's a great character drama.

Nothing. There is no must-read manga, because everyone has different tastes.
To take your opening example, I have no desire to read Death Note and never plan on picking it up. This is both because it's concept, while interesting, doesn't overly appeal to me, and because of the rather negative responses I've seen to Death Notes ending.
There are some manga series that have a greater appeal than others, but there will always be someone who doesn't like it and thus I really do not believe there could be a manga that all manga lovers have to read.

I have to go with marie-antoinette on this one. There are no must read mangas just like there are no must see animes. People really do have far to different of tastes for any one series to be in EVERYBODIES collection.

First, I want to say that I wholeheartedly agree with these sentiments. The reason there is so much (often shallow) diverisity in the entertainment arenas is because everybody is going to have a different idea of what is good.
That said, it can also be argued that certain manga and anime titles are quintessential to the medium, defining it in such a way that they will be used as the standard future works are judge by. Such titles would be the manga/anime equivalent to the core of classic literature and film studied in English classes across the nation.
However, I've noticed that a lot of people tend to shun those classics because they were forced to read them in high school. In addition to that, they had to analyze the classics and search for deeper themes and meanings that may or may not actually be there.
Of course, in the case of manga and anime things are a little bit different. There is less history, for one thing. None of the "classic" titles have been around for more than about fifty years, and most of them seem to be much more modern in nature. There is less to do with long-standing tradition than there is to do with advertising hype.
When you get right down to it, though, the classics--the quintessential titles--are not really the ones that everybody has to read (or watch). Rather, they are the ones people tend to have at least a passing familiarity with, even if they don't like it in the slightest. For example, I have a passing familiarity with Evangelion. It is one of those titles that many people have said all anime fans need to see; arguably one of the quintessential anime titles today. And you know what? I found it boring. I just didn't care enough to watch more than a handful of episodes. But I've heard about it, and I recognize the influence it has had on other series and the anime community in general.
Do I think there are titles that everybody should read? No, not really. There isn't one series out there that will be loved by every single person in the world. However, I do think that there exists an expanding core group of titles that people should have familiarity with, particularly if they are more than just casual readers or viewers.

Awesome manga; both are two of the finest examples of manga for mature audiences. I know alot of people don't like either title, and it really doesn't suprise me because like you said, the operate on diffrent levels and both have very complex storytelling techniques (especially Believers). Both put stuff like Death Note to shame in terms of writing and depth (I like the manga, but it's very overated).
But for a title that every single manga reader should be required to read (putting aside my personal tastes of course), I'd go with Nausicaa. Epic, emotional, thought-provoking, it has it all. From the most jaded adult readers to Shonen Jumpers, I've rarely come across a person who doesn't like it.

Everybody should read One Piece~!
Well, at least, everyone should try One Piece. I can't say everyone will like it though, it has a rather unique art style, which I like, but others tend to shy away from. It also has charming characters and a very comfy old world setting. And hey, it's a pirate story, and u gotta love those. Carefree sailing with friends, priceless moments. It's great stuff, u just live in it. I sometimes wish I could leave this world and join luffy on his adventures....*siiiiiggghhhh*...

Not really. Quite honestly, everything I've heard about One Piece really has made it seem to be one of the manga/anime I want to avoid most, because it's a very Shounen Jump type of series, which is great for some people but not at all what I want to be seeing/reading.

I'm repeating what others have said here. There's NO manga everyone likes. You can come to certain agreements about the value of several popular series, but not to the point where everyone agree it's a good manga. Taste is separated from objectivity. I could recommend my brutal favourites like Berserk, Battle Royale and Gantz, but I know very well that the extreme content and artwork of those titles is a turn-off for several people. Ergo - I won't recommend any series here.

If I had to choose one: Phoenix by Osamu Tezuka, its his underrated (at least in the west) materpiece about the cosmos and his own spirituality. Everyone should read it, particularly Karma the story about the building of the Great Buddha statue, I think the ending of that volume is some of the finest storytelling I've ever seen in manga (comics for that matter). Everyone should read it, help get more of it published here in the states (as its been sporatically released for the last 4 or 5 years). :P

i guess everything people have said is true...that it's really hard to find a manga that is THE best that will appeal to EVERYONE...I mean, there's reader age, and also whether the person would prefer Shojo or Shonen...plus, art style, and a million other things...
that said, I don't see a problem in recommending what some people see as the best...there will always be people who disagree, as well as those who agree...so yeah, you can never please everyone
well...now that I've stated that...in answer to the bulletin and to differ from other answers, I'd HIGHLY recommend Rurouni Kenshin...but then again if you're not into fighting then I guess it's not for you. (Although the characters are VERY well developed and thought out). so yep there you go.

Ditto. Really has a universal appeal, not to mention it's argurably the greatest work of the father of modern manga. Yes, everyone has individual taste, but the majority of people can come to a consensus on which titles should be required reading.

Like people have been saying, it`s really up to the reader on what manga they are to read. Because all people have different tastes for certain things, be it violence, sex, gay kind of stuff, romance, the list goes on.
