Since there are a lot of new members I thought it would be intereting to read their responses. I have read a lot of great ones (Sandman, Sin City, A History of Violence, etc.) but I think many of people of are ignoring them in favor of the Japanese stuff whether or not they are reading good stories.
And I know this is an old thread but resurecting them really gets on peoples nerves. |

hmm, hard question for me
To be honest they dont interest me at all, but I felt like replying anyway. Guess manga just has a certain aspect that attracts me much more than US comics, or any kind of comic-style for that matter. Ofcourse it has to has a good story, but that alone isnt enough for me; I need something that makes me feel like I'm actually reading an authentic Japanese manga. Kinda hard to explain, hope most will get what I mean. I usually dont get into manga with a more european or US style of drawing, tho there are exceptions offcourse. But even then, there's something about a real manga written by a Japanese mangaka that appeals more to me than any other kind of comic. or maybe its all just in my head 
But its good I limit myself in a way. Have enough trouble keeping up with all the manga I like

I don't read very many, but the few I've looked into I've loved. I find Sandman to be superior to 99.9% of the manga I've read. Also, anything by Jhonen Vasquez has me in stitches.

Right now I'm buying more US comics than manga (I still read more Japanese stuff if you count scanslations though). I try to keep an open mind to anything, reading both mainstream and alternative comics. My favorites include From Hell, Stray Bullets, Bone, WE3, Hellboy, Eightball (my favorite tale is Velvet Glove for some odd reason, though the most recent issue is right up there) and Frank. I'm currently reading:
Desolation Jones-Warren Ellis has been releasing tons of good stuff lately, but this is probobly my favorite. I Wasn't expecting it to be as serious as it was, but the second issue was, dare I say, touching. Besides, the fight Jones has with the porn queen and her gimp is classic 
DC The New Frontier-Quite possibly my favorite superhero story. Both an interesting commentary on superheroes in the cold war and an epic adventure, TNF is a sweeping saga that makes you beleive in the heroes it depects, a rare thing in this age of "MASSIVE EVENT THAT WILL CHANGE THE MARVEL/DC UNIVERSE FOREVER" that ends up being regurgitated crap. Black Hole-The art in this book makes Junji Ito's stuff look like Tokyo Mew mew. No, I'm not joking. Polly and the Pirates-Another fun little adventure from Ted Naifeh. While I'm sure some people will dismiss this as a kid's title, it's really one of the most enjoyable things being published right now. The Originals-While somewhat similar to a Clockwork Orange, The Originals manages to set itself apart with ultra stylish art and a story that's more rooted in emotions and characters than satire. I should consider switching to comic books as opposed to manga for a while. At least after I get the final 3 GTO's. After that, it's comic books for me. Their cheaper and I'm a huge fan of them all. Spiderman, Batman, Superman, Daredevil, The Avengers, Even some of the lesser known titles like The Runaways and Captain Britain.

Yep. Still can't decide if I like Marvel or DC better. Like Marvel's artists better, but DC has some of my favorite heros. (Green Arrow!! heh.)
I'm currently following... Runaways - a fresh-take on the whole 'teen superhero' cliche. Five youngsters find out that their parents are supervillians, and have to muster all of their strength to actually destroy their own parents. GREAT artists on most of the volumes, but occasionally they'll let a guest artist do an issue or two in 'amerimanga' style. It's not good. But the regular artwork makes up for it. Also features cameos by Marvel oldies - Cloak and Dagger having been reappearing in this series. <3 I love Runaways. Catwoman: When in Rome - The entire comic is done in traditional paint, something I totally respect in a world full of nothing but digital work. A murder mystery involving Gotham villians and the Italian mofia. Batman and Robin the Boy Wonder - New take on Batdude and Birboy, writing by Frank Miller. XD This comic...shouldn't be funny, but it just is. "What are you, kid, retarded? Who the hell do you think I am? I'm the god-damn Batman!" |

Absolutely. I mean no offense to those who only read manga, but there are a lot of American comics that I think far exceed what I see in most of even the most popular manga available.
Some of my recommendations (in no particular order): Transmetropolitan -- Warren Ellis Planetary -- Warren Ellis The Sandman -- Neil Gaiman Kingdom Come -- Alex Ross and Paul Dini Batman: The Long Halloween -- Jeff Loeb and Tim Sale Watchmen --Alan Moore I think that it's dissappointing how many manga readers look at American comics as inferior by default simply because they immediately think of superhero books like Superman, Spider-Man , etc. The reality is that just as in manga, there are good and bad comics that fans should seek out and avoid just like any other entertainment product. |

Yeah. I like Marvel, but my favorites are Ghost Rider and Spider-Man. A Ghost Rider movie comes out summer 2006! I can't wait!
i think that's just because they are the most popular american comics. I love Spider-Man, but Super-man just doesn't make sense...Clark Kent/Superman doesn't wear a mask...pretty hard to figure out who Superman is

There's a lot of good American comics out there but ANN, for obvious reasons, doesn't promote them. Here are a couple of my favorites.
Van Von Hunter:This title is an action comedy that came about from TokyoPop's American contests. Volume 1 was good and volume 2 was even better. You never know what to expect. Courtney Crumrin:This is a horror story with a fun plot. But it costs more than other mangas so I haven't finished buying it. I tried reading Sandman but didn't like it. I really want to read Runaways but haven't gotten around to it yet. |

I do! A lot of my friends are indie comic people so I read their stuff, of course. Vincent Stall's work is really great stuff. Robot Investigator is my favorite.
Hard Boiled has the most beautiful artwork I have ever seen. Geof Darrow's inkwork is nothing short of absolutely phenomenal. I LOVE this comic simply becuase of the eye candy. The story is pretty standard cyberpunk but it's told well. I enjoy a number of titles published by Oni Press, my current favorite being Scott Pilgrim. Volume three, which is coming out soon, gets bonus points for having the title "Scott Pilgrim & The Infinite Sadness." I can't wait to meet Ramona's 3rd evil ex-boyfriend. Scooter Girl is another favorite. I really like scooters, though, so that may have something to do with it. ^^; And, of course, Demo will always be one of my favorites, for the beautiful art and interesting characters. Demo #12 is one of the few comics that has actually moved me to tears. Finally, I love everything ever written by Lynda Barry. Marlys is the most glamorous comic character ever created. Seriously. If anyone ever runs across a copy of Lynda's work, snatch it up right away. It's hilarious. |

I read Savage Dragon when it comes out, Gødland, Noble Causes, Supernatural Law, the CSI comics, Girl Genius, The Phantom, Jon Sable and looking forward to the return of The Maze Agency.

My brother is into American comics, so I just take his stuff. The only series that I was reading and enjoyed were the Street Fighter series, Danger Girls, and Battle Chasers. They're pretty cool. You should check them out.

I'm currently starting reading Sandman, because my roommate now owns the entire series (I told her I wouldn't read it until she had it all
 ) and am liking it so far. I think I still like my favourite manga better, but that could change, seeing as I've only read the 1st and last volumes, and the At Death's Door manga which falls somewhere in between American comics and manga.
I generally don't read American comics though, simply because they are just so long most of the time. We have all these big series which have been running forever and it's just too much. I did pick up the Catwoman: When in Rome miniseries though, because she's always been a great favourite of mine. But in general, I find American comics to be too sprawling for my tastes. Of course, some manga does that too *cough*Rumiko Takahashi*cough* |
