The 1st quarter conference call didn't have any particularly news worthy anime items, but here are a couple things that I noticed, that we didn't include in the actual news article.

1) 4Kids cut its workforce by 10% this quarter
2) in 2005 Al Kahn mentionned that transition from Yu-Gi-Oh to Yu-Gi-Oh GX hadn't really taken hold. First quarter 2006 reflects ability of GX and they expect it to be a key contributor in 2006.
3) They also mentionned the Kappa Mikey show. It started on nicktoons, and will be added to Nicklodeon proper this fall. Started to license, expect revenu in 2nd quarter 2006. Nick told them that Kappa Mickey is their number 1 new priority on Nick in the fall.
4) They are not satisfied, however they believe they made progress over the dismal 4th quarter.

If you want to listen to the full 36 minute conference call yourself, you can listen here:

DIE 4KIDS!

OK, now that that's over, this has got to be the 5th time this year we've heard that 4Kids was losing money. I may be of on my counting though. Hopefully sooner or later they will die or at least stop treating anime like they have for the past years.

It would be better for them if they stayed away from anime all together. Or at least stick to the real kids stuff that won't need so much slicing and dicing. But seeing as so much of that in Japan is so heavy with Japanese culture Mr. Kahn would still feel it was his patriotic duty to sanitise it anyway. No, best you stay away Mr. Kahn, it's no good for your company and it's certainly no good for anime fans.

I've wondered this very same thing, why pick titles you have to do so much work on. I do understand your point on the cultural difference as well, but there has to some of them that don't need to be hacked to bits for the rugrats.

And I can't give a proper Death Wish as this is a far cry from it. Remember that they still made money, albeit much less than last year(4.5 to .5), but they are still in the black. I would say the biggest good news is that revenue fell only .6 million while profit dropped 4 million. But when they start dipping in the red I will give a proper death wish.

it's strange really, any normal company would've realized there's a problem by now, and tried to do something about it.

But this can also mean that they might try something drastic and end up licencing a really great series just to see if they can even make a profit, a last ressort in a way.

Monster anyone? That would suck.

About time you got here. Monster? Now that's really scary. Johann turns out really to be a girl because they won't allow cross dressing.

I don't understand. You mean they purposely pick titles that they feel they have to hack to bits because of a tax write off?

When I say work I mean money. If they pick something that is meant for children* then they will undoubtably not have to do so much work on it, and therefore not spent as much money on it. That would mean less money spent=greater chance for more profitability. For me if I was going for that market I wouldn't choose things that would not have to be completely switched around.

I guess I just don't understand the write off part, I must be missing something. I do understand the xenophobia though.

*. I know we all have are own definitions of what is and isn't appropriate for children. But I think we can all be sure that 4kids is aiming at the child market. So please take this as a generalization.

Possible Theory. It worked for Uwe Boll. Laughing
