Everyone is supposed to assume that he really is Chiyo-chan's father, no questions asked. Kind of crazy, I know, but that's part of what reason I enjoy the series so much.

I dont think you were supposed to actually think he was Chiyo-chan's father. Its just a funny quirk of the series and a mascot of sorts. I think the cat was just named the father and Sakaki insisted because of her dream that he was somehow Chiyo-chan's father. I think no one argued about it because well..... Sakaki is rather odd and it would have done no good anyways.

Well uh.. I never really understood it myself , but the words "quirk" and "mascot" pretty much sum it up (thanks for that, by the way). As the series went on, I just got so used to seeing him and didn't care for any rationale past a certain point . It would've been more trouble to explain a lot of those crazy things than it was worth. I just took it all for laughs .

A great series that stays with you even when you're done with it. I never regretted buying the DVD's, and trust me, it was rather difficult to buy it. Lots of recommendations convinced me though.
