I just recently got into anime and I purchased two anime dvds off of the Amazon Marketplace before I even knew about bootlegs. I was wondering if with the two specific animes I bought there was a definite way to find out if they were bootlegs or not. I bought the 10th anniversary edition of Ninja Scroll and Samurai X: The motion picture. So if there is anyway to tell if they are real for sure please let me know...Thanks.

Welcome to the dark, strange, but highly rewarding world of anime

There's a good way to know if the DVDs are bootlegs: If it's any 4Kids anime (Or any anime), and it has Chinese and English subtitles. Actually, if there are Chinese subtitles, you know it's the infamous HK (Hong Kong) DVDs. I've seen some for One Piece, and the English subtitles are hilariously wrong.

Better keep your mouth shut when something belongs to your "unknown unknown" i.e. you don't even know that you don't know. Especially when you've said that you once had no idea about bootlegs. Maybe I should change my ID from Dormcat to Donald. |

Well, becuase my Dvd player is getting fixed I have been using my ps2 to play them and when I go to switch the language there is japanese, english, chinese, and like 3 others could that mean anything or is it just the ps2? And also when I watch it and listen to it in english then put the subtitles on the way they word stuff is a little bit different.

I don't know about the PS2 thing, but I can tell you that often the subtitle translations differs from the English dub scripts on US releases. |

if during the dvds, you see the name of one of the fansubs, then you don't need to worry. most of the translations are top notch. otherwise, i know that some of this dvds are so wrong in the translations that they even change names of characters and say ridiculous things

Okay, you need to not jump to conclusions. Did I ever say that I own the HK DVDs? I just saw them on display, and some funny screenshots of the poorly written subtitles on 4Chan. So, think twice before you try chewing me out next time. |

Whether you own bootleg DVDs or not is completely irrelevant. It was your "Chinese sub = bootleg" speech that got my nerve, and most forum veterans know I'm very sensitive to that sort of incorrect and ignorant statements. |
