I'm writing my final year University essay on manga...

There are a surprising number of academic articles to do with the following:
1. Origins of manga
2. Gender themes in manga
3. Sexual themes in manga

I'm interested primarily in science fiction in manga, as well as comparing the artwork of the various samurai art, historical accuracy, cultural aspects, political significance, religion in manga, horror artwork, comparisons to western comics...etc.

Can anyone recommend any interesting journals or books about manga?
Would you enjoy reading about comparisons of artwork/themes within a manga genre? It's origins and development?...If yes...which are your favourite manga genres?

I can recommend a book for you: the recently banned in LA Manga:60 Years Of Japanese Comics by Paul Gravette. It should have everything you need from the history, the development of manga today, and even the different types (shounen, shojo, for men, for women, etc...). The book should be a great resource.

Matt Thorn's website has some good resources that discuss manga at the scholarly level. He's a shoujo specialist but has also covered some general topics in the field. He even teaches manga at Kyoto Seika University, so he's about as good as you'll get.

I finished my 15 page rough draft research paper on manga last week. Just make use of your university's online databases. I got a lot of stuff off EBSCOhost.

I'm not sure if this will help you but a book that I have is Anime Explosion!: The What? Why? & Wow! of Japanese Anime by Patrick Drazen.

I've enjoyed it and have gone back to it several times. He has chapters on conventions vs. cliches, hentai, folktales, bushido, faith, and others. He also has specfic chapters on Sailor Moon, Escaflowne, and EVA

Good luck on your paper. I hope that the research and writing go quickly and smoothly for you!
