Ok i have somehow or another watch strawberry panic i i would like someone to please tell me if its a shounen or shojo anime. by my first glance its pretty hard - cause there are numerous shojo elements - But there seems to me there some hints that this animation can be aimed at male audience - By all means not just the girl-girl kiss thing , its the fact i dont think this animation does not have the "balls" i.e no male characters yet. Infact i herd its like no mans land - ok im going of the topic shoujo or shounen..... and oh yeah im a guy!

The manga runs in Dengeki G, which is a seinen(older teen/adult male) magazine. It all originates from a novel series though, I'm not sure if that is still going or not.
And uh, one last thing.. animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/lexicon.php?id=48 Strawberry Panic is a shoujo-ai show. |

Mmmm, Strawberry Panic! A shoujo-ai series aimed for guys like me just like how Kannaduki no Miko is. I get all blushy when Nagisa gets all frozen and somewhat submissive everytime she stares at Shizuma. And that's where Shizuma starts to make her move!
Yea, it somewhat cheezy, but it's damn good cheese! |

I see where confusion of this type can arise since generally shoujo is aimed at girls but shoujo-ai is aimed at boys (well, I guess men, actually). So when you ask if an anime is shoujo or shounen, this doesn't mean you are necessarily asking if it's for men or women. I think the shoujo/shounen question is more relevant for manga since the art style more closely coincides with the targeted audience (usually).

No. Something being shounen-ai or shoujo-ai has no impact on whether or not it is shounen or shoujo. If you ask if something is shounen or shoujo, you ARE asking which group it is aimed at. |

Well I've been under the impression that the words shoujo and shounen were originally a classification intended for manga only, not anime, since many serializations in Japan have those words in their title (ie Shonen Jump, Shojo Beat, etc ). But among the fan community, yes that terminology has typically been applied to anime titles as well just for easy classification. What I was trying to convey was that a given anime does not restrictively imply that it's intended for boys or girls. Most anime is suitable for males and females of many age groups but most manga has a somewhat "tighter" relevance to specific demographic groups.

It's not "somewhat tighter," ALL manga has a specific demographic group. This is an unfortunate effect of how things are run in the business. According to Japanese manga publishing industry, there are only four types of manga: BOY GIRL MAN WOMAN or, shounen, shoujo, seinen, josei. These classifications say NOTHING about the content of the manga. They are basically about the target audience that a manga magazine/serialization is aimed at. There are some manga series made for kids of either gender, and "family" manga, and "alternative" manga that's just all over the map, but we like to pretend those don't exist, in order to better inflict this corporate hegemony on everyone. As a final footnote, shoujo-ai material can be targeted at either males or females, homos, heteros, bisexuals, asexuals, hermaphrodites, horny tentacle beasts from the planet Grflymbfk, whatever. It doesn't change the nature of what's in the manga. It only changes what kind of magazine it appears in and what kind of ads you see in between the pages. Ah, commercialism. |

If you actually bother to use the fundamentally flawed "gender-genre" system, then yes. Also, do please improve in your grammar and spelling. The level you exhibit here is unacceptable for ANN. |
