Everybody in this forum has read black and white manga. However, how many people have read colored manga? I have only read The One I Love by Clamp (and I know that there are only seven pages in color but it is still color!). But anyways, I was wondering whether people prefer to read black and white manga or colored? Do you think that color takes away from the authentic feel of the manga or adds depth to the artwork? Are there even a lot of different colored mangas around? (And this does not include cinemanga).

I personally do not like the colored manga. I like the regular style of black and white because it shows that the artist has true talent and does not have to take your attention away from the artwork with color. Also, I think color can be taken to far sometimes. I recently saw a book by the name of Idol Dreams (I am pretty sure that was the name) and the ink was all pink. All the shading, pictures, words, and effects were in pink ink. And this was not a dull pink but a shocking pink (much worse than that color). That alone turned me off of the book instantly. I am a girl and I could not even stand that much pink. How many guys out there would even be able to read that colored manga without hesitation?

I prefer to read manga in black and white, as opposed to full colour. I feel that colour would distract me from the plot, and focus me more on "Ooh, pretty picture....". If I want to see it coloured, I just buy the artbook.

Well, it's pretty expensive to do manga in color, that's why when you buy manga that might have those few colored pages, they'll be 2-4 bucks more than regular manga in Japan. I don't mind seeing the colored parts, cause it tells me, "Oh, that's what color her hair was or that's what color his shirt is" Simple things like that. I think color should be left to the imagination of the reader.

I liked having a few coloured pages, though usually you only get them in actual colour in the serializations which is a shame, but it would definitely be too expensive if it was all in colour, trades of North American comic books cost at least $20 a piece usually, often more.

I have three issues of Robot. It is filled with very beautiful illustrations, yet much more expensive than regular B/L magazines, and it's much, much thinner with very limited story (Range Murata's Groundpass Drive has only FOUR pages and FOUR sentences of dialogue). Personally, I treat it as an artbook rather an anthology -- don't buy it for stories or you'll be sorry; get it only for its artistic value.

Haven't read any specific color-manga, but I read a coloured version of Akira once and I'm still trying to forget about it. Rather than add to Otomo's art, the coloring took away most of the substance and obscured much of the details.

I prefer straight black/white images. There's nothing wrong with color, but simple toning is more than enough. It's remarkable how 3D some mangas look because of it.

I completely agree with you there. On the cover of the manga book they usually give you the basics of a character or two (like the hair and eye colors). But besides that everything else should be left to the reader to make up their own mind! However, if you do make up your mind about colors in a manga and then see the anime, you usually end up liking your personal view better than what is in the anime. The same thing happens with vioces of a character.

Robot had caught my eye because of the all colour concept, what exactly are the stories like? The first cover made it look rather "adult". Is it?

I'd say that it was very "adult". There is a lot of detailed nudity. But there are only a few stories in the book and they are very short, like dormcat said. I'd say that it's more of an art book too.

I've read some manga where some of the artwork like the pics in-between chapter breaks are in color but I haven't ever read a manga where the entire volume was in color. It doesn't really matter to me much if the artwork is in black and white or color as long as the art is decent enough because I read manga more for its storyline and characters, but if I had to choose between the two, I would prefer to read manga in black and white. I think that's one of the things that makes manga so unique and it helps the art style stand out among all the rest of the other comic books. Plus, it's how I've always read manga and I don't think I could get used to reading manga in color.

Thank you for saving me a lot of money, well atleast $25. I was planning on picking it up because I thought it was going to have some really good stories, but now I know it doesn't. I don't care much for artbooks so this is definatly not for me.

The only colored manga in my collection is the first volume of Fist of the North Star ($2.99 clearance at Borders). I didn't really like the colors and prefer a black and white manga anyday. Or maybe it was just that the story wasn't that interesting to me. Maybe if Monster was colored I would know for sure if manga is trully better in black and white or colored.
