I've been wondering what comedic anime are peoples favorites because I'm not a big fan of Japanese/Anime comedies but I might check out some suggestions. Hopefully it will change my mind.

My favorite has to be Colorful. Like I said I'm not big on "conventional" anime comedy and the dub work on Colorful felt more Americanized to me which really made me laugh. Just simple puns and stuff I could relate too. I have perverted friends, well I used to in High School when this DVD came out, who druel when seeing panties so I imagined my friends instead of the anime characters. The animation was easy on the eyes, which is always a plus, the comedy was there and although some people might find it offensive, it was funny to me, and I loved how each segment was only around 5 minutes which made it so that you wouldn't get tired of the same crap over and over again. Some early stuff was used later... "Ah Ya Pussy... Cat" ...but it was at an unexpected moment which made it even funnier.

So whats your favorite Anime Comedy? Don't forget to say why because then it wouldn't be much of a topic now would it?

My favorite would have to be Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu.

You dont have to have seen the original series to understand whats going on in this one... the original series was more action/drama and comedy. Fumoffu is basically a comedy/romance based around two high school students one who is a somewhat bossy student rep and the other is a military nut who has never been to school and cant fit into the social norms whos assignment is to protect the said student rep from terrorists... and let me tell you that Sousuke (the military nut) is one of the funniest characters in animation history.

Golden Boy is one of the few I have seen and I loved it. It is so damn funny, especially if you like sex jokes. It is by no means a hentai, but anyone who likes to laugh should see it. I also saw excel saga and I think they were trying to be funny but I absolutely hated that damn show, I never laughed once. Umm but yeah Golen boy is very cheap, 15 bucks, you should check it out.

I don't really know what my favorite is, but I'll put down the first two that came to mind:

Excel Saga: I simply loved this series to death. It was the king of parodies. And not just parodies of anime, but of american cartoons and things in everyday life. It was crazy and random, but still had enough sanity to keep my interested in the story. It was great because it was a story about the 'bad guys', who were also bad at being bad. I loved Excels fast paced talking and the last episode especially was hilarious. There were some great scenes that looked so much like scenes from the anime they were making fun of.

2x2 Shinobuden: It's a ninja parody. I think that in itself is funny. It's just about a bunch of ninjas, one female ninja apprentice and her friend in particular, who aren't really very great ninjas at all. Instead they lounge around all day trying to fight away boredom. The master, Onsakamaru, is extremely funny and is one of my favorite anime comedy characters of all time. It can range from fast paced to slow...but even when a joke wasn't being made I felt like I could laugh at any moment. The first episode was extremely boring and slow, but every single moment after that was some of the best laughs i've ever had.

Even though I like Anime Comedies they don't really make me laugh a lot. There are only a couple that have made me laugh a lot and those are:

Tenshi na Konamaiki:

An 8 year old kid finds a genie in a book who offers to grant him a wish. The kid wishes to become the manliest man among men, however, the genie decides to turn his wish around and transforms him into a beautiful girl. Six years later he (she) starts highschool and starts looking for the book to see if the genie will transform him back to a man. Once in highschool he makes a lot of new friends (all of whom are in love with him/her).

Hmm, I can't decide between 4.

Excel Saga: The big momma of parody anime. I'm pretty sure there have been others before it, but this series was the first I had seen of the genre. The first episode is just so wild and out there, that I really didn't know what to think yet for some reason I was laughing. Then as the show moved on it was parody after parody and they all came in unexpected ways (favorite episode has to be the space opera pardoy, all Matsumoto and Gundam but with Puchuus). Plus who can't help but love the no real point story of Pedro trying to get back to his sexy wife? Not only that, but after I saw Excel along came a few other shows that seemed like clones, namely FLCL and Abenobashi. I've seen FLCL and 2 episodes of Abenobashi, and while the series aren't bad after Excel Saga they just seemed to try to not only copy but also rise above the standard Excel Saga set. Not saying either show is bad, but compared to Excel Saga I don't think they really compare. Also the series gave us one of the greatest characters ever, Nabeshin.

Golden Boy: Six episodes of pure fun. Kintaro is just odd and unique as a character. All he wants to do is learn about the world and despite first impressions he always saves the day. Maybe part of the reason why I liked the show is because all of the gags came off as being more American to me but done in an anime. In my opinion Kintaro is just a great character and all of the jokes were just simply well done.

Azumanga Daioh: Who thought "boring" humor could be so great? Ms. Azuma has a real talent for making the most mundane events interesting and entertaining (also shown Yotsuba&). Everything was timed well and even secondary to even 3rd party characters (that friggin cat) were fun to watch. Not only that, but it was also one of those feel good shows. I also liked how even though certain events were repeated (sports festival and the like) each time they turned out completely different making the same set up new and freshly entertaining.

And...

Cromartie High School: It's Azumanga Daioh, but with guys! Anyway that's how I saw the show. It took me a few episodes but suddenly, the humor just clicked and then all of a sudden each episode was jam packed with laughs. Also it was one I could relate to, just sitting around and then all of a sudden some odd conversation topic comes up which leads into some "deep" thoughts on the subject. Laid back and odd gags abound, once you "get it" in the world of anime (at least in my opinion) it's pretty tough to find something better.

Definitely Honey and Clover.

I was cracking up on the floor so many times because of Morita, in almost every scene he was in in every episode. Truly a masterpiece in dramatic comedy, combining every element of anime except fighting into something definitely worth watching. This was definetely the funniest anime i have seen ~ I thought excel saga was very stupid, same with school rumble.

What? No mention of Magical Arcade Abenobashi??? This has probably cracked me up more than any other anime in recent memory.

I don't *get* alot of the comedies or even enjoy them, such as Excel Saga or Full Metal Panic FUMOFFU (although ep either 7 or 8 of the original FMP was HILARIOUS!)... but other shows that had me cracking up at some point:
Those Who Hunt Elves, Sorcerer Hunters, Slayers, Rune Soldier (all D&D type shows... all very funny I think)... Dragon Half, Kaliedo Star, Fruits Basket (the snake...heh), Goldenboy, Chobits...
Not all are necessarily 100% comedies but they have amusing moments.

Everyone here pretty much listed that majority of my choices. Since comedy is my favorite genre, let's see what others I tend to find highly amusing.

Galaxy Angel: The manga and games tend to be a bit more serious, but the anime is pure episodic fun. I guess the girls are supposed to be military or something, but most of the time they tend to be doing something other than what they were originally supposed to do. A lot of episodes are either parody-driven, slapstick in nature, or follow a theme of "CHARACTER does something questionable for personal gain but it goes horribly wrong so they try and cover it up." Plus, episodes often end on a negative note yet never brought up again.

Pani Poni Dash!: If Azumanga Daioh, Excel Saga, and Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi got mashed together somehow, you'd probably end up with this show. All the high school antics of Azumanga with the parodies and references to other works that both Excel Saga and Abenobashi did, done at an insane speed that few can catch up with. Parodies ranging from Vampire Hunter D to Dragon Quest to Mazinger Z and beyond, and thrown at you so fast that you may have to watch each episode a couple of times to catch it all. Very little to no plot advancement throughout the show, also, so you can technically pick up from any episode, although there are so many characters (something like 20+ altogether) of varying anime stereotypes (including a magical girl, go figure, haha) that I recommend seeing at least the first few in order to catch them all. Plus, Ichijou-san is far too random to explain.

Getter Robo Armageddon. You have to watch it dubbed. Not only is it the most hilarious thing ever, it's unintentionally the most hilarious thing ever.

"NO THE GETTER RAYS AREN'T FINISHED. [long pause] YET."

Thank God for Go Nagai.

FLCL would be my knee-jerk, 'how'd that get left off' contribution to this list - the series features the adventures of a 12 year old boy whose alien housekeeper keeps beating him on the head with a bass guitar, in the hope that another giant robot will pop out of his skull.

A couple others would be Fruits Basket, which has a fair amount of slapstick and situational comedy, and Kyo Kara Maoh, which is the all-boy parody of Fushi Yuugi/Escaflowne sorts of fantasy adventures. Neither is the knee-slapper that something like Abenobashi is, but they are both pretty non-serious for most of the show. Midori Days is another series firmly in the comedy genre, interweaving moments of serious character development with jokes about... well, a guy who has his right hand as a girlfriend.

joel_s95387, you should definitely check out Cromartie High School if you liked the English dub for Colorful. They both share the same ADR director (Steven Foster) and the Cromartie dub is absolutely hilarious. It's the only English dub I prefer over the original Japanese (although I haven't seen Ghost Stories yet...) and I'm normally very adamant about watching anime with subtitles. Also, the humor isn't the type you find in a typical anime comedy; it's very off-beat and feels more like something that belongs on Conan O'Brien or Comedy Central. Very, very refreshing humor in an anime genre made up mostly of people who turn into chibi figures at the drop of a hat. Anyway, give it a shot. I think it will appeal to your taste.

As for me, the hardest I've ever laughed while watching an anime was episode 4 of Abenobashi Mahou Shotengai (Fire It Up! Abenobashi Hong Kong Combat Shopping Arcade). As a huge fan of Hong Kong kung fu movies (and especially Bruce Lee <3), Sasshi's spoiler[martial arts training and resulting fight] was a joy to watch. I was--literally--on the ground, rolling with laughter when Sasshi was doing the Bruce Lee moves.
Also, episode 5 of Midori no Hibi, when spoiler[Seiji is unconsious and Midori has to keep answering the door and hold him up by the neck] made me laugh really hard as well. I think my S.O. had to actually pat me on the back a bit because I had trouble breathing. ^^;

Azumanga Daioh, and also the manga Yotsubato, are my favorite comedies ever. Kiyohiko Azuma's (who is a man, TranceLimit174) comedy is just so unique. The awkward situations he sets up just get me every time. I think a lot of the comedy in these series come off a lot better than "crazy" shows like Excel Saga/Bobobo/Puni Puni Poemy, which are also hilarious, but often seem to me to be trying a bit to hard to force a laugh.

I'll also say that some series that aren't strictly "comedy" are also among the funniest I've seen. Specifically Bleach, and the early episodes of Kare Kano.

I did not know that. I read somewhere a while back that Kiyohiko Azuma was a woman. Now that it's been brought to my attention I have no idea where I got the idea. Also makes his work even more intriguing in a way seeing as how he concentrates on female characters.

Cromartie High School is the only anime and manga thats actually ever made me laugh. It has no plot, but the characters and situations they get into make up for it.
