I highly commend what this guy is doing, going all the way to Japan to speak at the mecca of creative expression in manga. Censorship is a plague that is spreading across the internet and it needs to stop.

That explains why J-sellers are more and more hesitant to accept foreign buyers given how intolerant western laws are and they fear they might be arrested as well Laughing

That's now how laws work.

They're hesitant to sell to foreigners because they know how their work gets scanned and uploaded to the internet primarily by foreigners.

Which is funny, because a whole lot of raws come from Share, they just use westerners as an easy out.

Yeah, it's the case with mainstream doujinshi sellers and Amazon has a policy of not shipping any adult products outside of Japan, including many mislabeled products like figures and dakimakura. Some eroge companies have also blocked foreign IP addresses, like Visual Arts site: http://www.product.co.jp/

It's the reason why Dan Kanemitsu mentions:
Quote:
Since the proponents of the bill often site pressures from overseas as a rationale behind banning sexual depiction in anime and manga featuring minors, international opposition to increasing censorship in Japan is critical. It helps undercut arguments for increasing censorship of manga and anime.

which Brownstein also discusses, urging Japan not to give into demands from a small group of zealots, and cites the illogical nature of the recent arrest of Comic Megastore staffers, with regards to such rationale:
Quote:
It is also perplexing to see that three editors here in Tokyo were recently arrested for publishing drawings of adult material in a magazine aimed at adult audiences. Every culture has different standards about what level of sexuality is permissible. However, there seems to be a notion that manga should be regulated to better conform to “Western standards.” As a Westerner, I am not certain what standards are being referred to, since the full, uncensored depiction of adult nudity of both genders is common in some of our most popular movies and television shows.

Whelp, I just discovered something worse than a prude today. One who enforces their prudery upon foreign nations. I just have a slithering suspicion that a number of these types maybe closet pervs themselves. Sort of how a shocking number of anti-gay proponents are rather boy-happy themselves.

And customs are nothing more than people with miserable lives who wishes to make other people suffer as that's all they have to live to. Especially the Canadian ones. Asides from the case mentioned, just TRY to cross the Canadian border without any annoyance after leaving a video game or anime convention.

Anyways more about the topic of this article, how were his audience's reaction to his speech?

I've heard some war stories about this. Even Doug Walker (The Nostalgia Critic) had a mini-issue. While it's good they're being vigilant on keeping out some of the "bad" stuff that we know is really bad, when you're dealing with stuff that's not really as much of an issue, then there's a need to rethink about certain priorities.

maybe someone else can chime in, but this is the pic from CBLDF's site:

so it looks like it was well attended at least. Dan Kanemitsu was Brownstein's translator so maybe he'll blog about it later.

Also, there are talks at other events:
http://cbldf.org/2013/08/cbldf-executive-director-charles-brownstein-to-visit-tokyo-for-manga-freedom-speaking-tour/
Quote:
This weekend, CBLDF Executive Director Charles Brownstein will literally travel to the other side of the world — to Tokyo, Japan — for a series of lectures and meetings on manga and free expression, hosted by Comic Market (Comiket), Comitia, the Institute for Contents Culture, and the Uguisu Ribbon Campaign. While in Japan, Brownstein will also meet with experts and professionals in the manga industry in order to give CBLDF readers insight into the opposition and support that manga receives in Japan.
. . . .

On Tuesday, August 13, Brownstein will present alongside the Svetlana Mintcheva, the Director of Programs for the National Coalition Against Censorship, at the International Symposium on Freedom of Manga Culture. This sold-out symposium will examine legal issues pertaining to manga and the threats posed to creators and to readers of manga by regulations in North America and elsewhere. The symposium takes place at Bunkyo Civic Center 26th floor Sky Hall at 1:00 p.m., and Brownstein’s appearance is co-sponsored by ICC and Uguisu Ribbon.

This is kinda cool to see and very nice of Japan to let Comic Book Legal Defense to speak at Comic Market. It's very rare to have a foreigner to speak at Comic market and on issue on censorship and arrest of people possesing a certain genre that is considered a "criminal" merchandise.

Good thing they sent a nice clean-cut guy.
Wonder if Kanemitsu had to translate Brownstein's speech after each line, or they put up the speech already translated on a projector screen.

It's a shame but I do not see censorship easing up. If anything I can see it getting stricter... You can hear governments screaming out "Will you think of the children!" for their excuse.

I'm curious. Are they defending against the notion that all manga is inherently 'hentai' to a clueless public? Or that drawn pornography shouldn't be judged against the same criteria as photographed pornography? Specifically depictions of minors?

Or are they fighting against blanket bans that would prevent comic creators from telling stories with actual MERIT that utilize this sort of subject matter?

I'm a little unclear on the actual topic of conversation.
