Erm, who's the staffer at ANN with the obsession with the Wai Wai section of Mainichi? Because its obviously utter, erm, crud. Oh hay, lolz at the titillating news. I read it every day cause I'm edumacated.
New York's Kinokuniya, represent! Well, actually they mark up their manga more than Asahiya so I try not to shop there. But they do have a wide variety of titles, even if you can't browse them because everything is shrinkwrapped. They're great for buying magazines, because Japanese ones tend to come with little goodies like posters and stickers and they get stolen or fall out if it isn't wrapped. It's amazing that 80% of their sales come from teenaged American girls. I remember when I used to go there when I was a teenager and I'd be the only non Japanese in the store. Is there a more reliable source for that figure? |

That would be me. Sort of. I don't particularly care for Wai Wai, nor do I explicitely check it, but when I hear about an anime or manga related article in Wai Wai I check it out. most of the time I don't post the article. This one put me in an odd position. The article was interesting, but it contained a few glaringly stupid mistakes or misrepresentations. -t |

Haha, this thing has about just as much credibility as most critics with anime series and movies... and most game critics and anime-games...
They see one thing and says "This stinks! It's Horrible!" and think every single one that follows such is like that... ...oh, and the racy stuff (dealing with homosexuality), dear news people, are normally placed into another class (shoujo-ai; shonen-ai; yaoi; yuri). And they can't say that Shoujo manga is all fluffy-sexuallity; some Shoujo is dark and brooding. Surely they can't say that manga such as Sailor Moon, Saint Tail, and Cardcaptor Sakura fall into the same boat... Sure there are some rather off-the-wall manga, but hey ^-^ that's why they SELL. The same old stuff being done over and over again gets kinda boring... At least the people are spending their money on manga and not drugs and beer. I wonder what these people thought of Angel Sanctuary if they have a problem with Fruits Basket. ~haha~ but then again, they probably didn't even look at it~ |

Well, Shukan are a bit better than American tabloids. Shukan don't make outlandish claims and expect you to believe them like American tabloids do. Americans are silly like that. Shukan are basically magazines that find scandalous stories and exaggerate them for the masses. Some of their stuff actually has some substance but most of it is just titillating news. You'll usually find that the headline is the most shocking part and the actual story seems mundane in comparison. But the headlines are quite clever. I'd love to write headlines for them 
For awhile I thought all Japanese news stands sold was porn and manga. Then I realized that there are girls in bikinis on just about every magazine with male readers. Blah. Sex sex sex. Find a better way to sell your magazines. |

Not really; I think you missed the point. I think the best comparison you can make to this is the Talk of the Town section of the New Yorker, just more low brow. They're basically just saying, "Hey, horny American girls love our racy manga, can you imagine that?" |
