Before running a full site survey, I'd like to get an idea from you guys who your favorite anime convention guests would be.
In general would you prefer (pick one) producers, writers, directors, animation directors, character designers, or Japanese voice actors? And specifically, in your posts, name the guests would you most want to see at upcoming american cons. This is for some Japanese "friends" of ours who will be bringing guests to US cons in 2013. Taking recommendations from this thread, I'll create a site survey, and our friends will try to bring the most popular guests to US cons this year. note 1: Thanks for your votes, but the names are more important below. I'd like to see Yoko Kanno return to the US. I'd also like to see Mamoru Hosoda and Goro Miyakazi. For a real dream, I'd like to see Mamoru Oshii.
I wouldn't mind some manga artists coming over too. Naoki Urasawa, Rumiko Takahashi, Shigeru Mizuki, Monkey Punch, & Eiichiro Oda. Why not dream big. |

Nakajima Kenji, Iso Matsuo, and Akane Kazuki would top my list. As a topic for discussion, I suggest the problems of producing original anime productions rather than adaptations of existing works.

As someone who travels to cons primarily for Japanese guests I thought about this long and hard and for many years now. For me, it comes down to if the guest is right and if the con can do a good job showcasing them in the right way. Those things matter a lot. For example, some cons are great for guests that you want to interact casually because they're more laid back and less crowded, while others are better for big-name guests because of the crowd it draws for the concerts and panels.
But I guess that's not what this thread is for. Here's my 2c from a congoer perspective + a list of people that should be cool to see? Producers: they tend to be kind of insightful but only when sufficiently opened up. Depending on how experienced they are, they can also be very open and be the "closest" to fans in terms of knowledge set. Also they draw the smallest crowds, beating out directors. - Aniplex's Iwakami - Ghibli's Suzuki Writers: This is actually the toughest crowd. But unless you're Okada or Urobuchi I don't know how many people know about them. It's kind of interesting because like old-timer seiyuu many accomplished anime writers have written for a ton of different shows, so they can draw a small crowd just because most people can find a show or two the guest has worked on. But in my opinion the best writers are also directors or novelists or something like that. - Mari Okada - Gen Urobuchi - Hideyuki Kurata - Rieko Yoshida (I have Tamako Market questions okay?) - Takaaki Suzuki Directors: I probably shouldn't even bother. But again, unless we're talking about Miyazaki or someone attached to huge shows, not going to be a crowd for these guys. - Yoshiyuki Tomino - Mamoru Oshii - Mamoru Hosoda - Shoji Kawamori - Junji Nishimura - Junichi Sato - Hiroyuki Imaishi - Hideaki Anno - Shinichiro Watanabe - Yutaka Yamamoto (this guy is a riot, wish he was at every con) - Takayuki Hirao - Kazuki Akane - Kazuhiro Takamura - Takeshi Koike - Masaaki Yuasa - Atsushi Nishigori - Kenji Nakamura Animation directors: I'm not really up to stuff when it comes to sakkans and the like. I guess some animation directors overlap with directors and character designers too. Originally I came up with a short list but every one of them fit better as a director or character designer, so I moved them to those lists instead. Character designers: Same as above, but easier to spot lol - Akio Watanabe - Yoshiyuki Sadamoto - Mel Kishida - redjuice - Asako Nishida (love her designs) Japanese voice actors: I am a seiyuu otaku and there's no hiding here! - Maaya Sakamoto - Yoko Hikasa - Satomi Satou - Ayana Taketatsu - Saori Hayami - Yukari Tamura - Houko Kuwashima - Saki Fujita - Marina Inoue - Kanae Itou - Kana Asumi - Rie Kugimiya - Kana Hanazawa - Sayaka Ohara - Aki Toyosaki - Minako Kotobuki - Haruka Tomatsu - Ayahi Takagaki - Yui Ogura - Kaori Ishihara - Asami Imai - Yumi Hara - Sumire Uesaka - Yuka Ootsubo - Rumi Okubo - Yuki Aoi - Asami Shimoda |

Voted for writers, closely followed by directors. I like guests that can provide insight on creative ideas and inspiration behind a show.
I'll name drop Yutaka Izubuchi and Akihrio Enomoto, as they are key staff on Space Battleship Yamato 2199 and this is the anime I'm most interested in at the moment. |

Okay, no, I'm lying. Wakabayashi Atsushi or big name animators would be nice. I'd love to see Shida Naotoshi (Toei Animation) come on over to the US if only so someone could ask what it was like working on the good Last House episodes of Dragon Ball Z.

I've been squirming daily for any bit of notice of who would come to anime cons this year and closely follow certain Voice Actresses and only travel to Cons for this reason. They are very close to my heart. To name a few:

I would buy flight and con tickets in a heartbeat for the voice actress Mimori Suzuko. If she could come with her group, Milky Holmes, it would be an absolute delight.

Well I voted for Japanese voice actors, but to be frank I think any of the choices in the list would be good! More Japanese guests in general would be nice to see come to the states, honestly.

I'm a fan of seiyuu as well as musical guests; that's what draws me to any particular convention. My list of people I'd like to see could go on forever, so I'll pare it down a bit. In no particular order:
