I actually enjoyed the first two parts, and I felt that they were both surprisingly entertaining insights into the characters, and I especially found the first hilarious, despite the moldy premise. Now I know I'll probably have a lot of people want to crucify me by saying this, but I actually felt the two-parter was the weakest of the set. I really couldn't get behind the characters we weren't even gonna see again, and, despite giving a decent insight towards Shana's pre-Yuji activities, I honestly wasn't that invested.

And now I await people yelling at me for being an "overly tolerant sack of horse wangs with a poor taste in anime".

I enjoyed the first two episodes as well. I had a chance to talk to the voice of Yuji - Josh Grelle - about the voice changing in the first episode. They did a great job at remaking each others voice by changing the way the talk, breathing etc. The first two are just plain ova episodes but the final episodes are pretty epic. It brings back the mystery of Shana and you get to she her before she meets Yuji. I am an avid fan of Shana. One of my favorite series. I think they did a great job with the dub in my opinion. Cherami and Josh have done a great job.

I liked the first episode a lot, was bored by the second, and the last two just blew my mind. I could not believe the Shana franchise could be that good. The way they handled the mother/daughter relationship was amazing. It brought tears to my eyes. I would personally give those two episodes a masterpiece rating.

The two-parter definitely shows Shana at its best. I think the first episode was worthwhile just to have Yuji say "urusai, urusai, urusai!"

Yep, I am a Shana-holic.
Triple dipped on the first series. The singles, because I panicked, about them going out of print. The Funimation distributed box set with ova, solely for the ova, and then the BR/DVD combo.
I thought this Ova series was worth the money. The first episode was fun, and the last two brought up a lot of similar memories/feelings to me as the first arc, about the nature and implication of torches and their existence.

I have watched this within the past 2 weeks, and I had already forgotten about the surprise party episode though.
