Simple. "J-pop" and "J-rock" are just pop and rock music that originate from Japan. They're just buzzwords that the fanbase created to easily identify when they're talking about their favourite Japanese recording artists.

Well, I think alot of folks just own Anime soundtracks which have some J-pop/rock on them. Then, if there is a song they really like they will look up the artist and see if they can buy a full album by the artist. I know that The Delgados aren't J-pop, but after hearing two songs from them in the series Gunslinger Girl I went out and bought a CD from them. I think this is pretty normal for alot of anime fans. |

What makes Japanese music any less "normal" than American music? |

No, I'm not taking offense; I actually happen to be a fellow System of a Down fan, myself. I was just curious as to the choice of wording.

Her's the strange thing: a band can be labeled both as JPOP and JROCK. It all depends on how well-known they are. The Pillows are considered JPOP; and so are L'arc~en~ciel. The term "POP" in JPOP means popular (same here; but considered Britney-ish). If a death-metal band from Japan has a huge following, then they would be labeled as JPOP. Therefore, if System of a Down were from Japan -- and they had a huge following like it has here -- then they would be under the category of JPOP.

Actually, yes they are. The whole "J-Rock" is not "J-Pop" thing is BS invented by foreigners (non-Japanese). The term "J-Rock" doesn't really exist in Japan. See here. -t |
