This is a question to anyone who has the new FLCL release from Funimation. Does it retain the same extras from the original Synch-Point releases?

Funimation's DVD release has the following on-disk extras:

* Director's Commentaries for all six episodes
* "Ride on Shooting Star" Music Video by The Pillows
* AMV-type videos for five other Pillows songs
* Dubbing Outtakes
* Textless Closing Song
* Trailers

In looking over old reviews of the Synch-Point releases, it seems that they included on-disk image galleries which are not included in this Funimation release (or, at least, not on the DVD version, which is the one that I bought).

The Synch-Point releases also had other extras items such as booklets, etc.

So the Funimation release does not have all of the extras that the earlier releases had, but it does have some very good extras. The Director's Commentaries, in particular, were quite interesting.

Is the director commentary track with Tsurumaki or is it with Marc Handler?

The commentaries are from Tsurumaki. These are entirely in Japanese and so are subtitled, but the context of the questions & answers suggests that the commentaries were recorded while Tsurumaki was visiting the US, and that the interviewer was an American.

Finding six full episodes of comments from the Japanese director was a pleasant surprise for me... I had no idea that anything like this would be included. There is all sorts of discussion about cultural issues, etc., and fascinating descriptions of which show elements were long-planned... and which were dreamed up and thrown in during the actual production phase. Great stuff!

I think the final episode pushes a bit past 30 minutes, but they're generally 24-or-so minutes long.

From reading this thread, I'll pass on the blu-ray. It doesn't seem like there's any additional material from my Synch-Point release.

Good to know. That puts this release a bit higher on my priority list now. I'd already heard Handler talk about FLCL on his interview with AWO, so I wasn't too interested in hearing anymore since dub staff tend to run out things to say rather quickly.... I do know that Tsurumaki was present for part of the dubbing sessions (mentioned by Handler in that interview), so he probably was in America when doing the commentary track.

Does anyone own the Blu-ray version? For some reason I've seen some people give low reviews for it in Amazon saying that the blu-ray version is joke and isn't worth it. They bring up a bunch of points that make me question if its a good idea to buy the BR. here's a link, that way I don't have to explain word for word

http://www.amazon.com/FLCL-Complete-Collection-Kari-Wahlgren/product-reviews/B004DMIIPA/ref=cm_cr_dp_hist_1?ie=UTF8&showViewpoints=0&filterBy=addOneStar

Anyways I already own the original dvds but I'm a bit disapointed in them for multiple reasons (disc 2&3 have japanese commentary but no subtitles for them) and seriously considering in getting funimation's release but don't know if I should pick up the BR or just stick to DVD.

Those are troll reviews. Never believe the video snobs. Go for the Blu-ray if you don't have a monster of a HDTV. You won't see all those imperfections they are talking about. Better audio, cleaned up picture, and it's dirt cheap too.

An unfortunate problem for all upscales is that they are inevitably going to be compared to true HD encodes. I've said it many times before, but a blu-ray is pretty much always going to look and sound better than a DVD, and it only becomes more obvious the larger the display size.

Here's a post by someone who was quite upset with the BD release initially, but then compared it the DVD.

Here's Hi-Def digest's 2-star for video review...but if you actually read it:
Quote:
Still, I doubt there has been a home video release of this show that looks any better. Colors can be stunning, a few flares are breathtaking, and there is a nice obvious bump in finer, smaller details. I will not lie and say this release looks amazing. It doesn't. In fact, it's really not pretty at all, but in all fairness, it never was, and it never will be. Sometimes good enough simply is as good as it will get.

And, blu-ray.com's 3-star for video review:
Quote:
I'll merely provide my opinion that this is the best the series has looked thus far, and acknowledge this is the version to own at this stage in the game.

The one you’re talking about was a preliminary shot. This one is the real one.
