Wow, an all out shounen-ai series (with basically NO GIRLS ) actually got licensed. They're definetely cashing it in for the fangirls.

Yay! I had been really wanting to see this series, especially after seeing that yummy photospread in the July issue of Newtype And I definitely am glad that Media Blasters is going with the romanization "Sukisho" rather than "Sukisyo." "Sukisyo" uses a less common type of romanization, and this spelling of the title was confusing me to no end until I recently learned that "sho" could also be written as "syo." I know that Sukisho isn't the best shounen-ai series out there, but I'm still excited about this news.

While this series doesn't interest me in the slightest, I can comment that it's pretty much a given only girls and gay guys are definitely the target market and probably the only ones who will pick it up. No offense.

Yeah, I took a glance at the info and decided "nope, not for me" several months ago. It's too bad that shows like this can be cashed in just for the fangirls, while other shows like Full Moon wo Sagashite and Aishiteruze Baby will probably sit on the shelf for a long time.
And the "syo" isn't necessarily less common, it's just the type of romanization that the Japanese would be more comfortable with. All of the sounds ending with "i" (ki,shi, chi,ni,hi,bi,pi,mi,ri) can be combined with the sounds ya,yu, and yo to form single syllables. The other romanization for what sounds like "shi" is "si"*--this isn't confusing to the Japanese since they don't have a sound similar to "see"; it's pronounced "she" instead. So, if you combine yo with ki, you get kyo, ni+yo=nyo,ri+yo=ryo etc., so naturally, si+yo=syo. Check http://kanjisite.com/html/start/kana/hiragana02.html for a further explanation of the sound system and why some romanizations are irregular. *Watch the OP for Full Moon wo Sagashite; you see the word "Sinigami," which is of course also writeable as "shinigami." |
