After watching her performance as Ms. Deep in Read or Die, I was amazed at just how good a voice actress she is.
Many actors & actresses sound very much the same no matter what role they do, but she somehow pulls off great voices that make you blink at the credits and say "that was her?"
After all, compare these roles she's done, and tell me if you think that's you could tell it was the same person doing all of them:
- Ms. Deep, Read or Die
- Mimiru, .hack//SIGN
- Gally, Battle Angel
- Rei Ayanami, Neon Genesis Evangelion

I didn't know she was either of them, but then again, I didn't like either of these performances. All the more reason not to listen the R.O.D. dub.
But she isn't as bad as say... Monica Rial or Tiffany Grant, in my opinion. Again, it's just my opinion.

The ROD OVA dub really wasn't all that bad.

THe ROD dub was OK in my opinion. I personally never check or really care too much about who the voice actor/actress is as long as she/he delivers a good performance in the show. BUt yes I never would have guessed she did Mr.Deep and also Rei from Eva.

I would give Tiffany the nod for her performance as Altena in Noir, which is the only time I couldn't tell it was her. Otherwise, Asuka (Evangelion) and Tsunami (Steel Angel Kurumi) are way to similar in voice.
Monica Rial is another one whose voice is easy to tell. She's good, but I just couldn't get Kirika (Noir) out of my head when I heard her performance as Saki (Kurumi).

If you watch enough dubs, you develop a pretty good ear for the regular English voice actors and actresses, just like people who watch subs heavily can usually identify their favorite seiyuu in any given role.
I like most of Amanda Winn Lee's work (excepting Battle Angel), and she's a very interesting person to listen to in a panel discussion; I highly recommend it if you like dubs and ever get a chance to see her at a 'con. Rei is definitely her most distinctive work because it's so different from her normal spastic and/or sardonic performance (see also Momiji in Blue Seed or Rally Vincent in Gunsmith Cats, among many others), but her voice is also among the most recognizable. Same with Tiffany Grant and Monica Rial; you'll never mistake their voices if you hear them anywhere else, and they're both fun people to rub elbows with at a 'con. Tristan MacAvery (Gendo Ikari, among others), too, for that matter; this guy will actually hang out with common 'con attendees at 'cons and seems to really enjoy hobnobbing with anime fans.
Spike Spencer (Shinji, also Hugo in Battle Angel and many, many other smaller roles), I'm told, is an entirely different story. He doesn't do cons and doesn't even treat anime seriously.
The one English VA who can sometimes catch me off guard is Crispin Freeman. How many people, for instance, would recognize that the same person who voiced Hideki in Chobits also did Alucard in Hellsing?

Crispin Freeman - Also Amon in Witch Hunter Robin, and Togusa in the GITS: SAC series. Funny to see the contrasting roles he plays. Shady Leader of Supernatural SWAT Team / Mostly Human family man in a Mostly Cybernetic world. He also did one of the characters in the .Hack // Liminality series that came with the Video Games I believe. The only way to really catch him is to listen for someone who has a deep voice.
Lex Lang is hilarious, despite the fact that his voice is instantly recognizable. (Sanosuke from Kenshin and Crim from .Hack // Sign, are his most notables I can think of)
Sandy Fox is usually pretty distinct, though I liked her performance as the voices of the Tachikomas in the GITS: SAC Dub.

If you haven't yet, pick up a copy of Evangelion Platinum and turn on the Episode Commentary with Spike Spencer in it (along with ADR Director Matt Greenfield). He always seems to be asking "What was that anime again...". (It's sad when he starts saying "the one I did that first time... oh, yeah, Burn Up!" )
(In fact, I didn't think much of those commentaries on the first two DVDs, though I liked Tiffany's and Allison's on the second DVD.)

I agree. Some of his roles were easy to tell it was him (Wolf's Rain, Read or Die), but I think he pulls off a great performance for Balmung of the Azure Sky.

I had resolved not to get the Platinum DVDs since I already had the originals, but the way everyone keeps raving about them, I might have to break down and get them. (Hmmm, Christmas isn't that far of. . .) I like anime commentary tracks.
Speaking of those and our original subject, Amanda Winn Lee, her hubbie Jaxon/Jason Lee, and Taliesan Jaffe do some *great* commentary tracks for Death/Rebirth and End of Evangelion. In fact, I haven't heard better - or more informative - commentary tracks for any other anime.

Yuck. Yet another voice I can't really stand. I like him as Ginias in MS Gundam 08th MS Team and as Nagira in Witch Hunter Robin, but a majority of his dubs have too monotone of a voice.
I suppose the only reason I get on his case so much in particular is because of how bad I think he did as Sano (from Kenshin), Crim (from .hack//SIGN), and Ladd (from Gungrave).
From a general view, I guess he's OK, but the three of his roles I dislike are also due to the fact that he had to dub over 3 of my favorite seiyuu as well; Yuuji Ueda, Shinichiro Miki, and Jouji Nakata.

I thought the R.O.D dub was good.
Its a shame that none of the cast from the OVA will be in the series
I didn't know she was Mimiru though

Going along with what some others said earlier about crispin freeman, I think he is extremely talented. One of his most note-worthy roles IMO is when he played the manticore in Boogiepop Phantom. He was creepy, and shady, and very well voiced in that series. Another role he had that I have been particularly fond of is his role as Alex Rowe in Last Exile. One last suprising role that he did was when he did Straight Cougar in s-CRY-ed. I couldn't tell it was him at all.
Another voice actor that I never really hear anyone talk about is Brian Drummond. I loved him as Vegeta in the first American dub of DBZ, and he was good as Zechs Marquiose(sp?). However the role that I have heard him in and loved the most so far is him as Andrew Waltfelt(sp?) from Gundam Seed. He really does justice to that character and his coffee addiction .

Mm, hmm. He's probably my favorite Ocean Group actor, well, him, David Kaye, or Scott McNeil.
I especially enjoy his Zechs Merquise, though it isn't Takehito Koyasu, it's a splendid Western adaptation, and I think it fits darn near perfectly. Not to mention I like to impersonate his Zechs voice from time to time, though doing Vegeta requires me to raise my voice higher than I'm used to.

Crispin Freeman play Balmung in the various .Hack series in which his character appears (including Legend of the Twilight). And yeah, he's an amazing voice actor. I was first blown away by his work in Boogiepop Phantom, but then I've loved his work in various Harlock series, too.
Personally, I'm a big Hillary Haag fan. Her primal scream as Nene in Bubblegum Crisis: Tokyo 2040 when they "lose" Mackie sent chills down my spine.

Oh yeah! How could I forget one my favorite American female VA? She was awesome in her role of Ryo Hayakawa in Princess Nine! She also did wonderful as Mugumi Shitow in RahXephon, which I feel is a very good dub overall anyways.

lol...and here I thought I was the only one who tried to be his version of Vegeta . I'm not very good at it, but it's fun to try and pretend like I am . On a side note, does anybody else think that he might possible make a good Char Aznable in Zeta Gundam? I know it's not going to happen, but I think he could play the role well if given the chance.
