Have not seen Beserk so will only mention passingly. X the TV series is a masterpiece. X the movie belongs on the the same pile as Highlander 2: with the same motto. As for a comparision, I have heard Berserk is near the upper limits of violence gore, until added Gantz another level.
I think what makes X work for me is that it has a lot of depth, good characterization of a large cast to glue onto (Arashi and Sorata are my personal favorites) of both sides and a bit of moral ambiguity on just who is the "good guys". Intellectually and storywise, there are are references to to Shinto, Buddhist, Jewish, and Christian mythology and real world problems like absent parents and pollution you can "get" if you're of the inclination to be fasicnated. On the other hand none of these things intrude in an obnoixus way or bog down the story. You can just as easily sit back, enjoy the battles and story and not think. That right there is a huge accomplishment when you think about it. All the Best, Nani? P.S. My location is an X reference that those who have seen the series will get. |

I've seen both, but I agree that X the TV series didn't live up to the movie. X has pretty good action scenes and the story is intresting. It's done by CLAMP if you like there style. Berserk, in my opinion was better, except a fair warning is that the ending leaves you hanging. It is very gorey but the overall story is really good and easier to understand then X.

What do some of the people here mean when they say that the X TV series didn't live up to the movie? I saw the movie but not the series yet. I have to say that the movie was pretty mediocre. The characters, with hardly any character development, spoiler[drop like flies in the movie and I'm supposed to feel sad for them?] I felt that the movie was very rushed and incomplete, and would probably feel the same even if I read the manga the movie was based on to fill me in on the rest of the story. Most people think that the series is excellent and much better than the movie.
Berserk is considered by many to be a masterpiece. I still don't really have any intention of picking up this series anytime soon since I have other priorities. |

Sure X was good, but I wouldn't say it is worth buying. Berserk on the other hand is worth buying, and in my humble opinion is a far superior series when compared to X. Just trust me, buy Berserk and rent X.

I'm lost as to what areas outside of animation quality makes the X movie better than the X TV series. The X TV series not only expanded on the characters, but the events and story actually made sense. There were so many continuity issues with the X movie. Of course, I think only having the first seven or so volumes of manga to work on would do that for you.
I didn't think the X movie was terrible though, save for the last 20 minutes, which remains one of the most useless pieces of animation I've seen topped off by the spoiler[hokiest] ending ever, but I simply cannot see the movie at the same level as the TV series. I love the X series by the way. I most definitely recommend it. I also highly appreciated the existance of the OVA episode as episode zero. It may "spoil" events later in the series, but that's how the story is told in the series itself. It didn't hinder my enjoyment of the series in the slightest. |

I have both...Berserk is much better.
I've never really understood why everyone says it's incredibly bloody and gory. It's not, really...There's some blood, yes, but no real gore...Gore is in the manga, but not the anime. There isn't that much blood either. A truly gory anime would be Gantz... |

Berserk must be quite a series to be better then X the TV series. I want to rent it now.
As for X the movie being better........wow. I shake my head in jaw dropping wonderment at the surprises spoiler[or are they signs of the apocolypse? ]that sometimes manifest in this world. To have two people feel that way? Wow, that is up there as possibly the single most shocking opinion I've heard on these boards. I'd honestly be less surprised to see everyone here who voted for Bush (sincerly) demand more Arjuna episodes or see Gantz on network television---uncensored. All the best, Nani? |

Had I voted, my vote would have been for Bush, and I'd love to see uncensored Gantz on TV...
But then again, I'm not actually a conservative... |

I haven't seen X, though I'm sure it is excellent. Regardless, Berserk is easily my favorite anime of all time, and I think you would make an excellent choice in buying it. The only thing about Berserk is that the anime leaves you hanging. It only goes through like, half of the entire series. You're gonna have to rely on the manga to finish the series up for you, because as the fine folks here at the Anime News Network Forums will CONSTANTLY remind you, there will never be a second season, and you will burn in hell if you ever ask.

Yes, I voted for Bush(sincerely) and really wouldn't mind if they showed Gantz on network television uncensored. Does that make me weird? |

i hope u enjoy berserk as much as we all did and we obviously enjoyed it more then X. pick up the movie the reason its better is the fighting. i thought the fighting on X TV was not as good as the anime yeah the story was there but what good is story if not gonna back it up with some kick @$$ fight scenes. Berserk has awesome character development to go along with its awesome fight scenes. oh and i saw the box set again today for berserk its actually $57 i picked up gunparade march for only $20 and X TV will run you around 80 at best buy as well. does anyone else have berserk and chobits in their anime collection? i do and they are both some of my favorite anime. i dont get anime network so I've been buying gantz as it comes out and its also up there with chobits. i have 3 of the gorriest animes ever
