I've noticed a few anime that seem to have a mislabeled release format (i.e. TV vs. OAV vs. special).
First, RIN ~Daughters of Mnemosyne~ is labeled as an OAV, but despite being only 6 episodes long, I think it is a TV series. This ANN news story says it premiered on TV, and AT-X has a page listing a TV schedule for it here (the page has an image that may be NSFW). I think the confusion about this is on the part of FUNimation, who seems to have referred to it as an OVA. For example, this review by Chris Beveridge has the official description from FUNimation in the "what they say" section, which describes it as an OVA, but then later Chris says it is a TV series and aired on AT-X. I think FUNimation is just mistaken about it being an OVA, and it is actually a short TV series. Second, I think a couple of the anime made from Animax Award winning scripts are mislabeled. My understanding from the ANN articles covering the Animax Awards (e.g. this one) is the the award winning scripts are made into anime that are broadcast as TV specials. However, the first Animax Award winning anime, Super Kuma-san, is currently labeled as a TV series, and the second, Azusa, Otetsudai Shimasu!, is currently labeled as an OAV. Unless I am mistaken and those were different than the more recent Animax Award winners, I think they should be labeled as specials. Also, on the subject of Animax Award anime, I just thought I would mention that one of them didn't seem to be in the encylopedia (or at least I couldn't find it in the encylopedia), so I submitted it here. The submission queue hasn't really moved for a few months, so I figured mentioning it here might result in it being added sooner if someone happens to have time. |

RIN aired before the first DVD was released so changed it to TV.

Seems like -- lately at least -- its not uncommon for OVAs to get TV airings before release. Does this mean you want to reclassify them all as, "TV," or would it be better to go with whichever classification is used by the Japanese producers?

For Rin, what I've read says it was made specifically to commemorate the 10th anniversary of AT-X, so I don't think it would be reasonable to call it an OAV. It isn't a case of direct to video release being previewed on TV, but something specifically made for the TV station. Also, I think a comparable live-action release would be considered a TV miniseries (at least in the U.S. . . . I don't know if TV miniseries are common in Japan or not).
I think the cases that Dormcat links to are more questionable. |

If people agree with me on Super Kuma-san and Azusa, Otetsudai Shimasu!, could someone please change those to specials? I don't think there is any question that Super Kuma-san should be a special, as the TV designation is only used for things with multiple episodes and it only had one episode. For Azusa, Otetsudai Shimasu!, Justin Sevakis specifically said in his Buried Treasure column for one of the other Animax Award anime that none of them have been released on video (see at the bottom of this column), so I think it can't possibly be an OAV and should be a special. Even if he is somehow mistaken, I would be extremely surprised if it wasn't first shown on TV, as I'm pretty confident that all the Animax Award winning scripts get made into specials to be broadcast on Animax.

I agree those Animax Award anime are specials, so I changed them to that.
