I don't know how much of a discussion this will provoke, but I just wanted to share an anecdote from my day today with y'all.
I brought my violin to work with me this morning (I Asst. teach children's art classes in the summer) to play a duet with one of the kids as part of a performance during their art reception in the afternoon. So I'm sitting in the studio alone--the kids are rehearsing elsewhere--and decide to warm up on my violin by playing the violin version of "Aoi Hitomi" (basically "Memory of Fanelia" from Escaflowne). Now, there are probably less than 40 people in the entire building, including the kids, and the room I'm in is in a reclusive part of the building. And the music I'm playing, while not entirely obscure to anime fans, is far from one of the most recognizable themes in the medium. But lo and behold, as I'm playing, someone walks past the door, stops, listens to me while I play, and when I'm finished says "That's the first time I've ever heard anyone play that song in real life! It's Escaflowne, right?" Shocked I was so happy! And I was able to talk to a complete stranger like he was an old friend because we discovered we had something in common. And now I have started a new budding friendship.
Has anyone ever had an experience like this?

Ha, ha. Definitely.

I took an Art History class at a community college once, and our teacher was also the piano/music theory professor. He had the nice little routine of playing a CD on his sound system every time before he held class, sometimes jazz, sometimes classical, or a movie soundtrack, or a lot of other things.

Well, after hearing he liked jazz (also being a jazz pianist himself), I asked him if it would be alright to bring a CD for him to play before class. Of course, being just a tiny bit of an anime fan myself I thought of a great CD to bring him (I'm sure you can guess what it was when you add "jazz" and "anime" together Razz).

And after playing just the first trumpet riff of "Tank!," one of my classmates who I'd never met before in my life said, "Oh, hey! Is that Cowboy Bebop?!"

His name was Charles, and ever since I played that CD, we became pretty talkative during class and chatted in the hallways whenever we saw each other, which then led to my befriending of another classmate who liked anime and RPGs that sat right next to Charles.

And on another note, a few days later I brought the Chrono Cross OST, which my professor absolutley loved, and after he played it in class, the other guy next to me was a big RPG fan himself, so that's three friends I made through music.

I of course kept bringing in more music as the semester went on, and my professor was ecstatic for the chance to hear so many great tunes and thanked me frequently.

In addition to your theory Ms. Cloe, I think it's safe to say that music in general can create friendship, going along with the whole "music is the universal language" idea Anime smile. But yeah, your story reminded me of that, and I'm glad you made this thread because it led to my current reminiscence and allowed me to share a very similar story to your own situation Wink.

I guess the lesson to be had here is to be yourself, even in public, because you never know what you'll find or who you'll meet down the road Razz.
