This may seem like an odd question, but I'm wondering if anyone else has been in this situation. I have an unstyled mop of hair right now, but I think I know what style I want. I'm going to be cosplaying a character next month at Otakon, and to look more like him I want to get my hair styled like his. How can I get this done though? I know that most barbers let you provide a picture of what you want, and they give a cut based upon that, but does this apply to animated characters? I should also point out the the haircut looks fairly "normal" and isn't something gravity defying like DBZ. Has anyone ever done this before? Any help would be appreciated.

Why wouldn't a barber give you a haircut based on an animated character? Provide the picture, and they'll provide the haircut. I have a friend who grew his hair out then had it done up like Spike Speigel's do. There shouldn't be any problem with getting the haircut you want. If the barber wants the nice tip, then they'll be more than happy to give you the stylish look that you crave.

I tried to grow my hair long to make it into a pigtail like Ranma, but I cannot seem to get my hair to grow that long.

Totally just bring in pictures or if the haircut is semi-realistic, look for photos of real haircuts that look similar for extra goodness. Yes, in high school I thought I would try to be Rinoa from Final Fantasy 8 (resembling an FF character = self image boost, please), so I showed my hair guy some pics from the game. I got the highlights done and everything.. ^^;;; I'm definitely a dork. But hey, anime/game characters have the greatest hair ever.. if more people had fancy anime hair, many more people would increase in hotness points.. seriously.

The first step involves finding a way to get your hair to defy gravity.

If i remember correctly, there was a special on G4 Tech TV's attack of the show that feature "manga" hair gel or something. Actually there was a news article about it. Check out the discussion on it, pretty funny stuff.

Wow, that is complete crap? What, do these blonde airheads working for Garneir think anime is all about karate and wacky hair? What morons. No wonder that stuff failed. |

Hey, why not? But if you do find a way to make your hair defy gravity, do us all a favor and don't get a Yu-gi-oh haircut. I've been nagged to cut my hair for a long time, but no-can-do.
Tell us if the hairdresser gives you a wierd look. ![]() |

YOu odn't, because it look ridiculous, is ridiculous, and you will think it is ridiculous and that you are ridiculous for getting it in the first place.
Here's a novel idea; get nice hair instead! |

Well Steve tried the jerk approach, so i'll take the realist approach. Getting your hair styled after an anime character is behavior typical of the nerd stereotype. Truth be told, this sort of behavior is the kind that leads to most of the negative press about hobbies like video games and anime. People assume we immitate it all day and have no outside interests. If your desire is to further perpetuate this image, then you are well on the right path. Otherwise, i'd heavily advise against it. You are a unique human being that exists in the real world. Try discovering yourself before you try and take after fictional cartoon characters. If one must emulate something, at least allow it to be a worthy successor of character. Be like James Baldwin or even Hugh Hefner...but preferably, not like a Japanese cartoon.

Dang, is wish my scanner is working right. Foxtrot had a nice strip about the Yi-Gi-Oh hair. It's in the "Aren't I a Munant or What? book.
Kevin Rose said on "Attack of the Show" a few months back that someone told him he had Rock Lee hair. Yeah... okay. Anyhoot, I'm still with the Army, so the no, even if I had my mullet back. God, do I miss my high school mullet. |

Thanks for the help. I'll post how it turns out once I get around to getting it cut.
And just to clarify for those who think I'll wind up hating the hair/myself; I hate the hair I have now because it has no definate style and just hangs in my face. If I can get the haircut done well, I should like it alot (even when I'm not cosplaying). As I've said before, it looks fairly normal, and even those who have seen the anime would probably not notice it was styled after a character unless I was in costume. It won't be spiked fifteen feet in the air, and it won't be neon orange with green highlights. It will be a simple looking style with a few spikes and I'll dye it black (quite common in this day and age). In fact, the style might look quite tame compared to some of the people I've seen with punk/metal haircuts. This isn't meant to be a beacon of nerd-dom for all to see (that's what my Star Wars t-shirts are for ![]() |
