I was thinking about how cool it was when they animated Daft Punk's Discovery to make the film "Interstella 5555"; and it got me thinking: what other album would be cool to see put into an anime?
After a thoughtful consideration, one album stood out: Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots by the Flaming Lips. If you have never heard the album, find someone who owns it. I can just envision the giant pink robots fighting this powerful girl in a colored-up Tokyo; and when the song "Do You Realize??" hits, the most beautiful chaos will happen. I think either Hayao Miyazaki or GAINAX would do an awesome job with it. So what other album would make a good anime? |

Hm.. I never really thought of putting an entire music album with an anime, though I think that's what anime music videos basically are.
It'd be kind of difficult for me to decide since I don't really keep up with mainstream music anymore. I'm also not very keen on the idea of taking an anime that already has its own soundtrack and dubbing over it with songs or music made by other singers or composers. But taking a different perspective, if I could pick a singer or composer to do the music for an original anime, I wouldn't mind John Williams or Jerry Goldsmith for some kind of science fiction title. |

I'm listening to Call Me Burroughs by William Burroughs obsessively now; it would be perfect for animation. Giant black centipedes, Death Dwarves, The Subliminal Kid... I should note it's a spoken word album, not music.
Also Outside by David Bowie. A concept album about a detective investigating an art-murder. |

I've been listening to the album Music to Make Love to Your Old Lady By from LOVAGE (aka Dan Nakamura) religiously. It's a smart mix of samples and beats with pretty orchestral work and great vocals. Many of the songs have a "soundtrack" feel to them; they sound as if they were made for something visual (not unexpected; Nakamura is the man behind Gorillaz). In the same vein, I would also like to see some animation for the album Queen of the Meadow by Elysian Fields, as Jennifer Charles's voice is just so... descriptive. My head is filled with all kinds of fanciful images when I listen to her, and I bet more creative minds could think of even greater visuals. Finally, any album from Joanna Newsom would lend itself perfectly to animation. We need more harp music. I'd want the right directors, though. I think Satoshi Kon could whip out something fantastic for Joanna's soulful music, and Koji Morimoto or Masaaki Yuasa could turn out something great and innovative for Lovage or Elysian Fields.
I would be curious about Burroughs, Aaron, but tentative, since I'm not a big fan of Cronenberg's version of Naked Lunch. Animation may work, though. Oh, and Tony, I think omnistry was talking about creating original animation for music, a la the whole Daft Punk deal (or On Your Mark by Miyazaki)... not just slapping existing anime on other music, like AMVs. |

My Chemical Romance, a band I discovered a few years ago, recently released a new cd, and it's a concept album that's a continuation of their last cd, another concept album. *heh, I think I'm starting to confuse myself* Anyway, basically, their first cd is about some doomed couple that in the end are gunned down in a desert for going on a Bonnie and Clyde type rampage. Their new cd is a continuation of their last cd, and the guy of the couple is in hell looking for his girlfriend, and basically the devil tells him she's still alive. So to get back with her, he makes a deal with the devil, which is to bring him the souls of 1,000 evil men, and when he does that he can be with her again. In the end, after killing 999 evil men, the guy realizes the last guy he has to kill is himself.
So.. yeah. I think that if these two cds were to be animated into a anime, it'd be kick ass. What am I saying, the cds already kick ass, so of course the anime would. |
