310 jobs lost, hopefully those people will be able to find new jobs soon. I've got to say, I feel bad for those who lost their jobs and the fact they lost them so quickly.
This news does not bode well for Borders I must say. |

Sigh and more bad new for Borders I hope that they can recover here with out them there was no point of upgrading my Borders membership

Poor Borders. Still, it's a bit difficult for me to be surprised. From my personal experience, Borders stores tended to keep things at max price even years after a book got on their shelves and what few bad experiences I've had with bookstore staff were at Borders. They did the max price thing a lot with the CDs and DVDs they carried too, at least at the stores I went to. It seemed like they had a lot of needless extra staff too. (People just roaming and chatting with each other.) Once again though, it looks like manga companies will get the worst of it, just like the previous chain closures.

I just had an interview for borders.... I now feel as though with all the news on Borders recently that they may no longer be wanting to hire.

Richard, I know exactly what you mean. To be honest, the manga sections at my local Borders stores weren't that saturated with manga at all. Barnes and Noble actually has been, in my experience, a better place to get manga. Of course, I'm only talking about the two local chain bookstores in my market.

Well, Rightstuf already has all of my DVD business, if my local Borders closes then they'll get all my manga business too. Kinda sucks though. Shopping online isn't nearly as good as being able to pick up a volume and check out a couple pages to see if it's something I'd be interested in.

Monopoly anyone?
Borders has distribution centers in California (West), Pennsylvania (East), and Tennessee (Middle). The goal is actually to eliminate Tennessee and have the two remaining distribution centers take over and restructure the Middle USA area between the two. Dunno how thats gonna work TBH. |

I don't understand. Monopoly of what? If that's all Diamond distributes for, then there's still VIZ, TokyoPop, Yen Press, Seven Seas, Del Rey, and Kodansha USA. For me, this would only effect the CLAMP and Oh My Goddess releases from Dark Horse; although, I think most of the CLAMP stuff has been released, if not delayed or dated. |

I'm not sure what your day job is, but you should make sure you are never caught taking a drink of water, relaxing during a break or - gasp! - talking to a coworker during your shift, lest there be some massively judgmental dick deciding that you should be fired because he caught you during a few seconds where you weren't doing whatever it was he thought you should be. |

I feel bad for the people losing their jobs. That being said I stopped shopping there a while ago. It's cheaper for me to order online and have everything shipped to me. I think the last time I bought any manga from a Borders store was when they started closing the smaller stores at the end of 2009 start of 2010.

Considering that the only other Borders stores I know are either on the other side of the city my apartment is in, or the other side of the island, I'm hoping that they don't start closing stores down in Puerto Rico.
Heck, I just hope Borders pulls through. I love Right Stuf like Joanie loves Chachi, but having to go get a money order to order a manga online, not to mention the wait for it to arrive, is so much more of a hassle than just wandering into the store and browsing the shelves. |

I was working for Suncoast back in 2005/2006 when it went into bankruptcy and started closing stores, including the one here. All this trouble that Borders is going through completely mirrors what happened to Suncoast back then, up to and including negotiations with vendors, certain distributors refusing to ship, etc.
And no one would tell us regular employees anything, so we were trying in good faith to do pre-orders and special orders and kept running into problems, which drove customers away. It was a nightmare. I have several friends working at the local Borders (including the manager, who used to be my manager at Suncoast!), so for their sake, I hope the store stays open. But I'm not terribly optimistic at this point... |

These big chain stores just kill publishers. It was better when small bookstores dominated. Big chains decide what books to carry and as such determine what books will be successful. It's hard on small publishers, especially if the store decides to bully them out of their payment. So seeing someone like Borders go under isn't all that bad a thing.

I with Levitz 9 if Borders falls here in Puerto Rico I will have to go to Old San Juan to find a bookstore to buy books personally it would be sorely missed I LIKE browizing thru a store you never know want you will on the shelfs.
