Hello everybody,
I apologize in advance for the shameless plug.... my day job is as a Viz manga editor (so feel free to ask questions about that), but in my spare time I draw a webcomic. And in honor of "Free Comic Book Day" (May 7), I wanted to put in a shameless plug for an online comic site, www.girlamatic.com. www.girlamatic.com is a webcomics site with mostly female artists (I'm one of the exceptions). Most of the time, it's like www.wirepop.com in that it actually costs money to view the comics (except for a few free strips). BUT on May 7, Saturday, for 24 hours, all the strips are free! So if you want to check it out, that's a good day, since you can read through the entire archives. These are the strips on girlamatic that I would say are the most manga-like. * CHASING RAINBOWS (http://www.girlamatic.com/series.php?name=svetlanaseries) -- A really good romantic comedy with beautiful art. The artist is now working on a series for TokyoPop (and she's totally not even aware that I'm out hyping her comics on forums, so don't blame her). ![]() * BITE ME (http://www.girlamatic.com/series.php?name=biteme) -- Extremely funny vampire comic set in the French Revolution. * SEVENPLAINS (http://www.girlamatic.com/series.php?name=7plains) – This awesome pseudo-Victorian-era fantasy comic with a SHOJO REVOLUTION UTENA/ROSE OF VERSAILLES-style crossdressing heroine. * THE STIFF (http://www.girlamatic.com/series.php?name=thestiff) -- This is the comic I draw. It's a romantic comedy manga where the main character thinks sex is evil. Oh, and it's also a zombie horror comic. Okay… the shameless plug is just about over. Thank you for your patience. I now promise to actually discuss actual Japanese manga the next time I post…. ![]() Jason Thompson www.mockman.com www.girlamatic.com |

Sorry that I'm not commenting on the comics (thanks for the links and I will check them out later), but I do have several questions that you may or may not be able to answer:
Is Phoenix actually cancelled? Is there any chance the rest of No.5 will be published in english? Are any other series being considered for a new edition? Sorry if you can't answer these, but I'd really appreciate feedback, as getting answers from Viz by email isn't exacally easy. Thanks. |

I'm actually not 100% sure of the answers since I don't work on either of those books... but I think the outlook is better for more Phoenix than more No. 5.
As far as new editions of old stuff... I'm not sure about that either. (Sorry I'm so unhelpful. :/ ) There's a lot of old stuff in Viz's archive, but in many cases the old licenses have actually expired so Viz would have to re-negotiate the rights to publish new editions. Similar to what happened when Raijin started publishing Fist of the North Star and Viz couldn't sell the old Fist graphic novels any more. Jason |

Thanks for the info about Phoenix and No.5. I wasn't looking good for the latter for a while, but with Blue Spring and Sexy Voice and Robo coming out, it certainly seems like the time is right for it to get another shot. Oh, and great links. Interesting story you've got going, and a great art style. Definitally keep it up.
