I was wondering if anybody watches an anime at times not just for entertainment value, but just to relax or chill. Like after a long a day work/school or just (if you have an ipod or other media device) to kill time. This also includes watching a certain anime or scene in a anime to release emotions (bad day, motivation, or something funny).

Sometimes I watch a little Gundam Wing or Black Cat since I've seen them more than enough I just simply enjoy the show.

I watch Kampfer whenever I've had a bad day. It always cheers me up.

Aria is the ultimate anime to watch at leisure. I'll definitely re-watch it sometime.

Kanon is what I always go back to when I want to be in a good mood. I've watched through the entire thing four times already, and it always makes me feel like a little kid without a care in the world. Even the depressing parts don't drag my spirits down, since I gain new appreciation for how well the plot has been constructed every time I watch it.

Can't think of another series that I can do that with. I'll just get bored and my mind will start wandering (possibly to bad places) with anything else.

I guess sometimes when I feel a bit lonely I chuck in Lucky Star, even as being background noise and makes me feel less lonely.

I would not have expected such passiveness in face of Kanon's drama. Whilst the series certainly draws the viewer's attention away from any personal woes, I previously assumed it could do so only through the exposure of tribulations far more grave than one's own.

A candidate I would mention is Di Gi Charat. What it lacks in budget, it compensates in idiosyncratic oddness. It comes into its element when any semblance of narrative gives way to delightfully random and aimless gags.

After seeing it more than three times I was able to start looking at it from a different perspective, one that no longer put me through the waterworks. When I watch it now, it's more wish fulfillment, putting myself in the place of one of the more awesome girls (I'd like to be Nayuki or Ayu; they're almost always cheerful and having a great time) when the show is in a happy mood. When the show is going through a depressive episode, I then switch to just admiring how well it's executed and how much of a hunk Yuichi is.

Appreciating the drama does require me to recognize how well the writers are able to play with my feelings, true. After so many viewings, I can acknowledge that without fully committing myself to the emotional onslaught. I can still go there, but I can also choose not to.

Nothing brightens up the day more than watching kung-fu tyrants doing battle over post-apocalyptic wastelands.

Remember to try to add some reasoning to encourage discussion and maybe even inspire interest in the series you mention. Otherwise it's really just listing.

For me it's a series like "Haibane Renmei" due to the more docile and tranquil mood of the series. There's no fight scenes or fanservice jokes or other cliches that just get tiring and often have little real contribution to the shows content. It's just an interesting and engaging character drama that tells a wonderful story. The great setting and amazing soundtrack certainly help a lot as well.

Whenever I am in an anime funk and am just tiered of the genre I watch FLCL and it revitalizes me. I know its not exactly in the vein of the OP but I think it applies. FLCL just reminds me there is alot of creativity in the anime world for those who look for it

I could understand if you get burned out by a certain genre, like when I watch too many shounen or get burned by a long series I watch something like Shoot Fighter Tekken since it's really short.[/b]

Whenever, the illogical nonsense that happens at work gets me down I will pop in a disc of Dai-Guard. It is pretty much dilbert with giant mecha and extraterrestrial aliens except that after they have made their depressing joke about office bureaucracy, politics and clueless anal retentive bosses they then celebrate the human spirit to overcome such nonsense and save the day. Extra points for everyone being an adult instead of an angsty teen and no newbie plot.

Whenever relationship issues get me down I rewatch a few episodes of Lovely Complex. It soothes and encourages me to see other people have relationship hell in a hilarious fashion.
