...I heard that 14 minutes was taken out of the American theatrical release. Not that that has anything to do with the poor box office, but it just means that I'm sure as hell not going to see it until the 14 minutes is restored.

Actually, it was 20 minutes.
Ghost in the Shell has had a big cult following in this country since the release if the first movie, so of course those fans would pack the theaters to see the sequel, even on a limited release. And even though Akira had a big following back in the day, and still does to an extent, touting Steamboy as "a movie made by the director of Akira" isn't enough to pack the seats. And besides, how much money did they really expect to make on only 37 screens? |

what did they cut anyway?
I don't think is because of violence but still its weird. |

They cut out twenty minutes of the movie. That should be reason enough not to see it. In any case, neither Appleseed or Steamboy have been at my local theater (At the cheapo theater in my town, half the screens are for indy or less known films, such as anime), so it is not like I could have seen it anyway.

Maybe they'd actually get more money if they had a bigger release. I planned on seeing this two months before it came out with a friend and we were so pissed off when we saw it wasn't playing anywhere near Washington D.C. which would be the most likely place for Steamboy to be played that is closest to where we live.

Uh, RedComet, it is playing in DC at Landmark starting Friday... which is the trouble I guess with this sort of release... it's tough to create buzz with this rolling opening.

I haven't checked in a few days and haven't been up to date. Where did you find that out anyways? |

The movie was not cut. There are 2 versions: The regular version which is being shown at the theaters and the director's cut, which is 20 minutes longer and shown only in Japan.

Wrong. The dub version cut 20 minutes from the movie. There is no "directors cut" version. Some theaters are playing the subbed, longer version of Steamboy in the final showings of the evening, however. |

Whatever. It's not going to be in a theater near me so I won't be seeing either one until it comes out on DVD. But from the reviews it sounds like it sucks anyway. |

Where did the "20 minutes cut" come from? According to the Landmark Theaters website:
Steamboy (English Version) Run Time: 1hr 46mins Steamboy (Subtitled Version) Run Time: 2hrs That's 14 minutes missing from the dubbed version. |

There are varying reports of the length.
The SF Chronicle lists it at 104 min for the dub and 126 minutes for the sub. http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2005/03/18/DDGD5BQH1H1.DTL#flick2 |

Bara: Then you're also not going to be seeing any anime from Otomo in the future, because no one will sponsor him.
cubs: You have a point. The demographic Steamboy's aiming for was probably too young to remember Akira the first time around. It probably would've been smarter to say something like, "From the director of Akira, and the studio which gave us Ghost in the Shell", considering that I.G. had a part in the final product. OTOH, it was really SAC that boosted sales for the movie. If Bandai/Manga hadn't gotten it on Adult Swim last year, Innocence would probably be in the same boat as Steamboy. Plus the PG 13 rating saved it from being another Bebop movie. Ask John: You rock! Just wanted to say that. Anyway, I disagree with the header that Steamboy did "poorly". It had a smaller theater count than Innocence, and also came out during a busier week at the movies than Innocence did. Plus, despite how much the hardcore fans like myself hate it, it appears the newbies are taking a liking to it, and will help give it good WOM and possibly decent home video sales. |

animenewsnetwork.com/bbs/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=150902#150902 about about people not going because 14 minutes is missing, let me ask you this: how often do you get a chance to see an anime movie in a movie theatre? bunch of closed minded cheapos, thats what you are. thats the reason this movie did poorly. |
