Hi!

This was an older thread of mine where I posted my Panty and Stocking video review and talked to people about it. It was pretty cool, you guys are awesome.

I figured I'd periodically update this thread with my new reviews like I've seen some others do on this forum, rather than spam the place with a new thread each time I have a new anime to talk about!! Razz I recently posted a video to the little-known anime 'Legend of Duo', which you can access by clicking the link below. Feel free to watch it and talk about it! You can reply over there or here, doesn't matter to me. I'd just like to hear everybody's thoughts on this weird show! Laughing

Also check out some of my previous episodes below!

If you wanna see my entire backlog, check me out on my contributor page over at Reviewtopia!

Here's my own review if you're interested. I differ on a few points, for example I happen to like Chuck, but I'm glad to see that you at least get what the series was about and aren't one of the many butthurt anime fans it successfully trolled.

I'm not too big a fan of it, but I don't really hate it either. It was cute seeing an anime parody and make fun of American animation. I liked how they actually did their research when it came to making fun of tropes found in American animation (as opposed to all the American cartoons that try to mimic anime, but fail to do research and just throw in some generic art style and call it a day). However, that kind of got old after a few episodes, and outside a few of them ("Vomiting Point" comes to mind, which was very GAINAX-esque) they were forgettable (but maybe that was the point) The soundtrack was good, though. I'd say it's alright, but I can't see myself ever rewatching it ever again.

I'm really mixed on the show. It's trying something new (for anime) and it's nice to look at. Dearth of character and story don't really matter because that's not the point. It just needs to be entertaining.

But the clincher for me is that I just did not find most of the jokes funny. Now I don't like to think of myself as a prude - I watched Drawn Together and loved nearly every moment of it - but to me, this show doesn't know what to do with it's material. So there's this whore and she has sex a lot and then the characters swear a lot as well (in engrish no less). Oh, and there's lots of poo and vomit and semen too. Apparently that's enough to make it funny. It's not. Am I missing something here? Is this what's enough to amuse Japanese audiences, a juvenial attempt at potty humour?

And the lazy, lazy parodies. So many times in the show there would be a bad pun reference to some bit of western pop culture and then it would simply use some elements as plot points as a vehicle to cram in more sex and poo jokes. Or prehaps not even that. It seems like the show has the sense of humour of a 12 year old. After the second hald of the series I realised that this wasn't going to change and had to actively switch off my brain and force myself to chuckle at what I half-recognised as jokes; sort of like how you'll find things funnier if you hear other people laughing.

And when the crude jokes aren't particularly funny, everything seems unpleasant. The one-joke characters become irritating fast when their jokes lose tolerability. The fascinating animation of people vomit loses that quickly when it's repeated every second episode. When the grossness isn't funny it just becomes...well, gross.

To me, the only times when the show shines is when it forgoes it's attempts at potty humour or shallow gags and just becomes an exhibition of the art and animation, particularly during over the top fight scenes. The episode when our lead duo first confront there arch-rivals is a joy to watch and whatever potty humour it throws in during the fight isn't rubbed in your face like in other episodes.

I don't hate the show but I don't like it either. It's become my bench mark for a completely middle of the road anime in terms of enjoyment; half the time it's fun the watch, the other half I spend trying to remind myself of that there was an enjoyable half.

The ending...got aboslutely no reaction out of me. Neither a "oh GAINAX you deliciously, sly bastards" or "Bloody GAINAX, what is this **** you're trying to pull?" I just rolled my eyes.

Um, that's exactly how Drawn Together, South Park, Ren & Stimpy, and all them are like. The creators said people in Japan don't find that funny or use that type of humor, and they did it because it was suppose to be parodying American animation's reliance on crude humor (Drawn Together was mentioned specifically)

Lol, the art style almost reminds me of Samurai Jack. Samurai Jack was awesome haha, but I digress. Anyway, I might actually check this out, it's probably not an anime I would buy, but it seems it might be worth watching online even if just out of sheer boredom.

Yeah, I read your review around the same time as I was posting mine. Review swapping is awesome, don't you think? Razz

The real irony there is that (imo) Panty and Stocking if the best thing Gainax has ever done by a significant amount. It's almost like, in trying to make something that they perceive as bad they've ended up making their best thing ever, while all of their serious attempts are flops.

I realised that it was a parody on crudeness but I didn't find it funny at all. Putting something in and saying, "oh look! This is silly and we know it's silly and we know you know this is silly so here it is in all its sillyness" doesn't necessarily make things funny or a good parody. I'd compared it to the "______ movie" movies if I was being really mean but that's the extreme case. In my opinion, Drawn Together or South Park or Ren and Stimpy were clever with their material. PSG doesn't have a Scooby Doo-esque song with lyrics consisting entirely of slang/colloquialisms for vagina.

Gah, but this is just a matter of what people find funny. Simply put, this show just isn't very funny to me.

The statement boggles the mind. I need to go and lie down with a cold compress on my forehead and the curtains drawn.

Last I checked, Evangelion, FLCL, Gurren Lagaan, and (although I don't like it) Mahoromatic were anything but flops. Rolling Eyes

As for PSG, I agree with JaffaOrange; I saw no cleverness in its humor. Thus I had zero reaction to it, so I moved on. And please stop comparing these kind of shows to South Park. Whenever a new anime comes out that's big on toilet humor people always go strait to that comparison regardless of the quality of said anime. South Park understands comedic timing and its episodes have (more often than not) a little thing called a point.

If you find that funny, I guess. I just see a crude political soapbox for the creator to wave their opinions around, not unlike Family Guy for Seth McFarland. At least Panty and Stocking doesn't have any of that.

In other words, it has nothing worth watching at all.

Yeah, it can be.

Eh, I guess I've been a fan of most of Gainax's work, except for Evangelion, and I'd hardly consider that a flop. Gainax has also been trolling its own fans since at least 1991 when they made Otaku no Video.
