I used to be a big advocate of older animation. Recently, however I haven't been able to stand it. I had to drop Future Police Urashiman because I was getting sleepy while watching slow, slow frames as people spoke for like, thirty seconds with only mouth flaps moving.
I don't know why, but it's getting to me. I still love older 90's animation, but I can't get back in the rhythm with anything in the late 70's or early 80's. I've been watching Galaxy Express 999 and it's slowly breaking the mold so wish me luck! |

Lupin the 3rd, Dirty Pair, Fist of the North Star many of the other classics.
I love them all. I have no issue at all with the older anime at all. Actually I prefer it much more then most of the newer stuff but there are a few tittles here and there i do enjoy. I was able to get my hands on an import of the first season of Lupin the 3rd and the first half of the season is not all that great looking at all and a lot of the animation is very dated and stiff, but the anime overall was still very entertaining. I love many of those 80s sci-fi series and personally i think the stories have a lot more heart and much more entertaining then most new anime in the last few years. Galaxy Exspess 999 does have its slow points. Also Older anime looks a lot better on DVD as it does streaming. For whatever reason older anime does not compress well. |

I grew up on 80ies and 90ies anime shows. I remember being obsessed with Gunsmith Cats, Ranma 1/2, and Sailor Moon. Those kinds of shows still have a special place in my heart and I wouldn't hesitate to watch them again.
However, I might have some difficulty with watching older shows I haven't seen before because we've all been spoiled with better/cleaner animation of 2000-2010. I tried watching Robotech a year ago and was completely turned off from the show because of the animation. I know its a really old show, but I just couldn't handle watching any more. At least I tried to watch it. I gave it 5 episodes and called it quits when I couldn't get into it. |

I don't mind the bad animation in and of itself; I can hardly expect that shows from thirty years ago would move as cleanly as modern shows. However, my problem is the shows that the animation is attached to. They just seem so dated. Not the art or the character design or the lack of digital inking, or even the music, but the story and the personalities of the characters. The dialogue. And especially the humour. Sometimes the reason that I don't like the plot is because I've seen it many times before in newer shows and so find it cliched in the older show, even though twenty-five years ago it may have been novel. But only sometimes. (I do try and go easy on the show or movie when that happens, but it can be hard.)

I certainly find it detrimental when the animation quality isn't up to par. However when the plot is good and the show is fun it is often possible to ignore these animation ticks. Say for example with venus wars, Legend of Galactic heroes and Fist of the north star. However If the show isn't my kind of thing bad animation will make it impossible to watch for me. Whearas I might have stuck with the show had it not been poorly animated.

It makes up a big portion of what I watch. Just finished Dirty Pair TV, going through VOTOMS now, next will probably be either L-Gaim or maybe even Zambot. Still, older movies and OVAs are still some of the best anime has to offer overall. Of course, people around here probably think Sailor Moon or Evangelion constitute as ancient anime.
I think the oldest show I could stand to watch would be Ashita no Joe, or maybe Cutey Honey. Other than that, Yamato is still excellent. Despite liking Uncle Go, I doubt I could stand to watch all of Mazinger Z or Getter Robo. The latter TV series and OVAs, absolutely. Same with Tetsujin 28 or Astro Boy, I could easily watch the 80s remakes, but not the originals. By contrast, anime in the 80s is fantastic compared to the 70s. Orguss and VOTOMS are some of the best examples of more detailed art in TV shows I can think of for early on. I guess it depends on your tolerance for older stuff, generally people have none. |

some of the older stuff can be done very well. Ranma 1/2. Shows like Air also have some great of the newer styles. Shows like Robotech are still good even with the older anime style. The new Super natural anime looks great as its well done.
so some of the older anime are good with story or even art work styles. I can think of Lost Universe that comes to mind as a older style of anime that's still good today. |

Oh, and one thing I've noticed that helps immensely with watching older anime is if it has a remastered audio track. Old audio quality does actually degrade the viewing experience more than the visuals. So definitely look out for those.

Not too much into the older titles, but I do enjoy anything that is done well and is good in both visuals and audio. Title that fits my likes very well is the remastered Gunbuster version...even after 20+ years it has what it takes to still be a great OVA (great story, characters, visuals, and audio), and one of the best epic Sci-Fi anime titles ever. I don't mind Astroboy (the color remake) but it doesn't get me all excited to watch like Gunbuster. Bubblegum Crisis is another one I enjoy nearly as much as Gunbuster; mainly because of the story and characters.

I love Bubblegum Crisis. I wish more and more anime were like it. Even the cheesy 80s music is catchy. Also, shows back in the 80s and 90s seem to have a lot more to say and just more creative then a lot of anime today. I would rather watch and random episode of fist of the north star then the majority of what is out there today.

It was probably the older version. My ex-roommate had all the DVD's and I don't remember seeing anything with "Remastered" written on the cases. But aside from the animation, I just couldn't quite get into the series itself. Wasn't my cup of tea. |

I have no problems with older or bad animation, if the plot of an older anime is good. Good animation doesn’t make any series less boring if the story is boring or the way it’s told is boring. Nice animation certainly didn’t help me to like Air and older animation didn’t prevent me from liking Rose of Versailles and Legend of the Galactic Heroes.
When it comes to older anime, I’m wary of shows that are presented as good by people who saw them in their childhood. They can be good, but usually a certain amount of nostalgia is involved and those shows are hardly good. |

It's a good thing there's a vast amount of older anime that never left Japan, so nostalgia can't possibly exist. |
