Does this coalition have a formal name?
Is "Multi-National Manga Anti-Piracy Coalition" the official name? Or is a name being formulated? |

This makes me nervous. I realize I have not bought anything for awhile for manga, but there are not many series I actually want the physical books for. Many of the series I was buying have been dropped and not I have an incomplete collection. Too many times I have started a series and then the plot gets so bad I won't buy anymore. Also, I am flat broke these days and can't spend money on things like manga or even books. It has been months since I bought a book since I can't spend the money. My only savior are places that I can either read online or download. I prefer just reading online, but most of my yaoi titles can only be downloaded. Plus, I love a lot of Korean titles which are totally ignored. I guess we will just have to see the fallout for this. Maybe this is why mangatraders is gone already? It hurts this website is gone since I lost everything on my hardrive and was trying to re-download some titles I really did want to keep. Sigh! If they would offer someway to read online, I would pay maybe a monthly fee if reasonable, but nobody does that.

I hope it only applies to stuff licensed for the language of that country and not stuff like KnJ or Lolicon Phoenix which will never see the light of day in NA ever.

Wait, you mean these rights effectively taken away by the coalition members? Strike me completely unsurprised not a single creator's name appears in the coalition.
One's got to love the spin with this remark.
No other alternatives? You mean, instead of forming this coalition to go after scanlation sites there wasn't a single thought to use it and create a competing website? Again, I am not surprised by this statement.
Not going to happen. You see, there's this law called the DMCA and it has a section in it, number 230, which gives sites free and clear rights to continue as they are because they're not responsible for the actions of their users as long as they're complying. Good luck with this, coalition. You've obviously not seen the results of others who've taken on this very same approach to sites they tried to shut down and yet still continue.
Good luck trying to track down each and every single user who uploads to the site.
Who will simply tell you, "Unless the site actually hosts the data, there's absolutely nothing we can do." (you would figure the lawyers would already know this) For the record, just look what other coalitions did when trying to shut down The Pirate Bay. Millions of dollars wasted and the site's still running. Learn from this before you make the same mistake. Pissing of consumers, whether they pay or not, isn't a wise decision. But go ahead and knock yourself out. Doesn't matter to me if this attempt comes back and forces several coalition members to remove themselves because they've no business to run because of this mistake. |

The consumers are the ones who pay. Why would a company worry about pissing off the massive rip-off sites? What are the rip-off artists going to threaten to do? They are already doing as much damage to the companies that they can do, as fast as they can do it, What threat can they make? |

Cut to 10 solid pages of people saying this won't fix anything and that these people are dumb for trying to protect their IP at all.

Nice. This has been a long time coming. I can't wait to see what the outcome is going to be. And what people are going to do when MNMAPC comes for them.

Lol Zac! Quite true. I look forward to the schadenfreude I will experience from the posts these people make once a number of these sites are shut down I've seen so many pages of "you can't stop piracy! you can't end scanlations! it won't actually affect us!" but I wonder what these people'll be saying once major stuff happens? A few sites have already been closed, and it's only been a few DAYS. Just think where we'll be at the end of the summer, or a year from now [HTMLComics shutdown was the result of a year of work, but given the early announcement of the teamup, and the larger number of publishers than the htmlcomics coalition, I imagine work might be done on a number of sites from all we know] |

You did notice the 36 Japanese publishers on that list right? You do think that they're going to want to protect ALL their copyrights, right? Note how it says "while simultaneously undermining foreign licensing opportunities " , which I take it means making it harder to get unlicensed titles licensed. I mean, if my work was being pirated overseas, I'd want all my stuff taken down, not just the stuff that's been licensed. |

..... you do know what a library is right? I'm assuming they have those in Indiana http://www.publiclibraries.com/indiana.htm Wow, that's a lot of libraries, wonder if they have any manga? http://www.ilfonline.org/ Let's check! http://sherloc.imcpl.org/?q=manga Well, this library has 874 items listed for manga alone [and wow, looks like they have some mature readers titles too]. Add in interbranch loans http://www.imcpl.org/using/illcardholder.html , and hey, that's a LOT of manga. |

Dark Horse and VIZ are over 20 years old now, with VIZ having published since around 1987, and Studio Proteus [who published with Eclispe/VIZ and then moved to DH] has been around. Toren Smith actually appears as a character in Gunbuster he's been around that long. Fred Schodt has been translating manga for over 30 years if you consider his Rose of Versailles english edition and Manga Manga! Even Tokyopop has been around for 12 or so years now, seeing as MixxZine was first published in 1998. Studio Ironcat, CPM, and AP were all publishing translated manga from about the mid 90's onwards. Go Nagai self-published some of his works over 25 years ago if you read the recent column on Devilman Jason Thompson did. The first issue of Antarctic Press's Ninja High School, one of the earliest domestic manga series, was published in 1987. It predates the OEL term by over 15 years, and predates the majority of fans using scanlations sites. And with Anime, Animeigo's been releasing subbed anime for over 20 years as well. Meanwhile, Robotech's almost 25 years old. Glenat, Kana and other publishers in France do french manga, manga is published frequently in Korean, Carlsen and Tokyopop do German editions, and there's also english and chinese publishers offering legit editions all over Asia like http://www.chuangyi.com.sg/new2/index.php Chuang Yi [they service assorted regions like Singapore, and I think they're also distributed in Australia- yup, Madman distributes their titles for that region]. Not to mention assorted Italian and Spanish manga publishing houses, and Spanish-language publishers across South America. edit-- ooh, and hey, anyone who likes 007Ghost, looks like ChuangYi will be publishing an english edition for Singapore- http://www.chuangyi.com.sg/new2/licensese.php So you might be able to import volumes from Australian manga retailer websites, seeeing as Madman'll be distributing Chaung Yi's edition of Vol.1. Might be pricey, but it's in english, and might be an option for those who don't mind importing it who want future volumes once it gets past Go Comi's edition, if no one else picks it up here. |

Let anime and manga sites promote your japan shit for years. In fact that was your only promotion among these years.
World is aware of your anime and manga via these sites.. Now suddenly they are the bad guys.... |

My first experience of manga was sailor moon and CCS volumes from Tokyopop/Mixx in our local Forbidden Planet, years before I ever heard of scanlations. These sites where you can read hundreds of manga online in one place are relatively new. Last time I read a scanlation I had to download it from a specific site or bittorrent and page through it in an image browser.
Making the entirety of something freely and easily available is not promotion, especially when those titles are already available legally in English or obviously will be if you wait a while. There are two potentially justifiable circumstances: titles that are not available in English (and in this case buying the Japanese manga as well would be the honest thing to do) or when you absolutely most keep bang up to date with the latest long running series but you are definitely going to buy it when it becomes available legally. |
