There has been a thought I've been pondering for quite a while now. Funimation and Bandai each have their own distribution lines in re-releasing their older titles with Funimation having their Viridian Collection and SAVE lines while Bandai has their Anime Legends line. But why doesn't Viz have one? Worthwhile titles like Video Girl Ai, Key the Metal Idol and Saikano are still licensed by Viz and have been out-of-print for years yet the company hasn't bothered to re-release them. What's the reason for this and if they're not gonna bother re-releasing them, why not allow another distributor to claim rights to them?

Here's how I believe Viz see's the world: If it doesn't sell tens of thousands, what's the point?

I think they've been spoiled by some of their bigger titles like Ranma, Naruto and Death Note to point that they've become a standard for other, less popular shows like the ones you mentioned, and that's just not right. I mean, Funimation doesn't hold other shows up to DBZ's level and Bandai doesn't hold theirs up to Cowboy Bebop, but yet Viz seemingly holds everything up to Naruto. Their egos are so huge and they don't need to sully their hands on "small time" shows, even though theirs a sizable demand for them (have you seen the prices for Maison Ikkoku?)

Of course, I think the fact that Viz is a manga first company has something to do with it, too. All they want from anime is some big profit to help their manga line keep them alive. So if doesn't sell gangbusters, they don't need to waste resources on it since all they want is a lot money. That, of course, brings spite from anime fans since Viz doesn't really give a shit about what we want since they're only in if for the money and don't really try to hide it.

Long story short: If it doesn't do gangbusters like Naruto, Death Note, or Bleach, they don't need to waste anymore money on it. And that's crap.

For Viz, re-releases just don't seem to work out. The last time I saw a re-release from Viz it was Ranma 1/2 when they re-released the series, OVAs and movies. Like a desert mirage, it was out and then swiftly disappeared. Its a real shame too, Viz has some great series we might not see any more because they subscribe the "once its gone, its gone" selling model.

Forget re-releases. Viz won't even do first runs for Monster past boxset 1. What is up with THAT?

Yeah I know my Ceres Celestial Legends collection weeps everyday to be completed, but it never will be unless I find a legit used Ceres Celestial Legends Collection 2: Ascension on E-Bay.
