I dont go out of my way to find these bands but I enjoy some. My favorite is probably Peelander Z, definitely a fun band. What I like about them is they try to combined the energy of punk with the craziness of Japanese pop culture. They like to go out of their way to be weird and wacky in a funny way that adds to their live performance. Actually I get to see them next weekend at Naka Kon so I'm really looking forward to seeing them.

Peelander-Z is one of the more unique bands out there. Uzuhi is actually pretty influenced by them. You might want to check them out at: http://www.myspace.com/uzuhi

Hmm.

May not be 100% what you're looking for, but I'll recommend The Axis Of Perdition since they've been directly and somewhat heavily influenced by the dark ambient music Akira Yamaoka produced for the Silent Hill series.

What exactly is your criteria for 'Japanese influenced' bands?
Isn't Peelander-Z, Uzuhi, Gelatine, Birthday Suits, Tokyo Tramps all comprised of Japanese members? So how can they be 'japanese influenced'? Is the Strokes 'American Influenced"?

Tokyo Tramps website even states :"TOKYO TRAMPS is on a mission to deliver joy and excitement of true American music, Blues and Rock'n'Roll" Where exactly does that point to Japanese influence?

Echostream - yes they got 2? members that are japanese? Sound very gothic to me, not really japanese

Peelander Z is entertaining, and one should see them at least once. They're pretty random and are definitely unique. Beyond that it's your call , some like some don't.

Uzuhi - The lead sounds like the drunk guy you find late night at a bar totally drunk singi..whoops butchering old songs. You know what I'm talking about, they scream at the top of their lungs and pound their chest, and act overtly aggressive. I find nothing memorable about their music.
Let me ask you this, if they were not Asian, would you still dig them?

The other bands such as Typherus, Geist, Akai Sky, Lilac pretty much all image (and a pretty derivative one at best) with very little musical substance. I can sum them up: - J-Fail
