TOKYO —

A new short animation film featuring characters who are a batch of dough and ‘‘an egg princess’’ directed by Hayao Miyazaki is now being shown in Tokyo.

‘‘Mr Dough and the Egg Princess’’ is a 12-minute story dealing with the two characters running away from a witch named Baba Yaga who lives in a lonesome water mill deep in a forest. The Egg Princess, serving as the witch’s servant, is forced to do hard daily chores, while a batch of kneaded dough in a trough all of a sudden comes to life from the witch’s spell.

Kiyofumi Nakajima, chief of a museum featuring the director’s film studio, said Miyazaki, moved by a painting of a grain harvest by Dutch painter Pieter Bruegel, expanded on the image of the painting and produced the new film.

Miyazaki in a message said he has learned that there are stories about bread running away in countries where people eat bread and that inspired him to make the animation film.

The film began showing Nov 20 at the Ghibli Museum in Mitaka, and runs through March 14 next year.

Sounds like a weird fairy tale. Which country has a story about bread running away where people eat bread? I wonder if he'll use this in a full-length animated film later on....
