Sorry, but I was rooting for Takemoto to win over Hagu. Sure, he doesn't have his act together yet, but he's younger, and thus won't die on her sooner; he ain't related; and he doesn't come off like a control freak like Hanamoto or Morita. And I kind of feel like it's "cheating" that she picks the Prof., because of their past together. Plus, if she didn't have that effed-up hand, I'm not entirely sure the story would go that direction. It sort of feels "forced" to end that way. Plus, I was hoping Mayama would get the message that Rika doesn't want him, and he'd grow up already and go for Ayumi. And Morita should be perpetually stuck in man-child mode, not the only person among them who wises up.
Gawd, I can't even believe he scored with Hagu, when he's the least smooth mofo of the bunch. So sure, I appreciate "realism", but not when I get c**k-blocked out of a good ending for a "meh" ending. Last edited by GATSU on Sun Jun 13, 2010 1:19 am; edited 1 time in total |

As for Takemoto, the statistics for ending up with one's first love are grim, and I think one of the things that's interesting about manga and anime is that they often aren't afraid to reflect this reality.
Think you might be getting Nomiya and Mayama confused. Unless I've really gotten the ending wrong, Mayama and Rika are semi-official (his persistence did in fact finally pay off) while it's implied that Nomiya will have the patience to wait for Ayu to get over Mayama - albeit not to the point of becoming a chump. Safe money is on eventual Ayu and Nomiya post-series. As for Morita and Hagu, I don't think they necessarily "did the deed". They seem to have been completely clothed under the covers when they woke up (as opposed to Mayama and Rika, who were clearly naked under their covers). Morita did drain some of Hagu's emotional energy - a bit unfair considering her circumstances but understandable considering the lousy timing of him concurrently being terrified about his brother Kaoru's condition and having had his own energy drained by worry over Kaoru for years - but I think that was as far as it went. As for Shuji, he's a great guy, but I agree with you that him ending up with Hagu was a bit weird considering their blood relation and age difference (not to mention that flashbacks suggested she grew up with him almost as a brother figure) and the suggestion that she might not be with him for the best reasons. I have no idea if their relationship is less strange in eastern culture than western, and would welcome any enlightenment as far as that goes. P.S. - funny age difference story. My maternal grandparents had a 20 year age difference, and my Grandma joked to me when I asked out of curiosity about her family's reaction to the matter that her German parents were more mortified that she was marrying an Italian than that he was 20 years older than her.

The ending came off very satisfying to me. You aren't the only one cheering for Takemoto, but having the seemingly good guy always come out on top just isn't how life works. I am able to relate to him very closely and imagine that things turn out great for him in the future.

I realized and noted that. But I still feel it should still be a satisfying ending, anyway, given how much personal investment I've put into the characters and the series, too. When the low-rent live-action movie has a more satisfying conclusion, you know the author didn't try hard enough to tie up loose ends. Besides, what's so "realistic" about being "kidnapped" by a director, or being the son of a mechanical genius?
Yeah, I remember them having the same first name, but I thought of it as the same second name, for some reason. My bad. Corrected
I kind of think that was a later thing, but that's just me. The author was clearly playing with the readers on that one, though.
