Dragonaut gets a rental because it's not nearly as bad as I was expecting in terms of quality or misogyny, and the dub is quite good.

You still have another half to go. And it's really 26 episodes with the OVA. Is FUNimation including that on the second half?

hmm considering what happens to most of the characters that provide the fanservice in part 2. I'd just cut the crap there and skip to the ova.

the trailer for part 2 on their site shows scenes from the ova

I don't have much to say about the titles covered this week, but that Higurashi Shrine has filled me with envy and admiration.

Good thing my fiancée is also a fan of anime and manga. Means I don't have to get rid of my stuff because she thinks it's weird. Laughing

I've been in the anime watching business for 11 years now and I too am still a bit wierded out by Japan's lustful fascination with underage girls in anime. Though, I'm not going to mention anything further in fear of instigating another of those child porn arguments we love to have so much.

That Higurashi collection is awesome!

I haven't watched Popoton yet, but it sounds like Erin has bumped up against the one strand of anime/manga that gives NA audiences the most pause: the overt sexualization of characters who - regardless of their official "age" - are clearly visually (to North American eyes) underage. I have to admit to a certain de-sensitization at this point, but the first few times it happened it was quite jolting. Anyway, it will be interesting to see if Erin's invocation of "child pornography" will spark the usual debate. Could she be trolling??? Laughing

Ah whatever. It wasn't a planet anyway. Wink

The truly disturbing thing about Popotan is not just that Mii exists, or that in the visual novel this series is based on, Mii gets more sex scenes than any other character. The really disturbing part is that young or young-looking characters appear in lots of shows (Kiddy Grade, Burst Angel, The Familiar of Zero, Indian Summer). Clearly there is a large demand for characters this young in sexy situations, and it's so pervasive in otaku pop culture that it's accepted in Japan. Popotan aired on TV in 2003.

Yeah, that's what creeps me out too. It's the popularity of this kind of thing. It's at the point were it's not something that pops up in the odd place. It's like, right up there with the staples of cliche harem characters.

I couldn't help to notice in the photo of the Higurashi shrine, how her dvd cases went from clear to dark gray. (Fallout from the Geneon thingy) It always bugged me that they did that since the dvd sleeves are two-sided and the clear cases would allow you to see the other artwork at the same time. Instead of complaining about it, I really should just get myself some clear cases...

I haven't watched it either but from what some are saying on the forums so far about this, this is something that I will check out for myself. I've already added it to my netflix queue so I am curious to see hoe good or bad this series is.

The loli has been a staple of cliche harem characters ever since Tenchi Muyo! established the cliche harem lineup with Sasami. The other thing that must be taken into consideration is Japanese sensibilities again American ones. No one calls them out on any of this except foreigners, most likely because they realize its a f*cking cartoon, equivalent to 2ch ripe with complaints about Stewie's active homosexuality on Family Guy even though he's supposedly a toddler.

@Jen's shelves: Nothing more refreshing than a woman with a healthy appetite for moe ^^

Of course Popotan gets perishable, never mind the fact it's the only show with actual heart in this column.

There is a larger plot about talking to dandelions and moving the house and being on a journey or a quest, but it doesn't resolve in a satisfying way.

You're kidding right? Unless you WANTED the sisters to hate each other and stay separated.

The characters in Popotan are as much defined by their cup size as anything else.

It's sad that people won't give this show a chance because they can't see past the character illustrations, but you wouldn't be the first.

Young-looking rant

Ah, American sensibilities, you rear your ugly head once again!

Without Mii, this would just be some dumb sex comedy.

So Mai's story was about sex? And not about friendship, loss, heartache, torn feelings within herself?

...but overall, it's a prurient work, with no social, educational, or societal value.

So is Dragonball, Dragonaut, and 98% of all anime ever made.

There are at least two other reviews of the show on this site if you disagree with mine.

Dude...just don't. You can argue and go through the same old tired debate if you like. Bottom line though, it's still an image that is intended to represent a child. No matter how you dress it up, you are getting off to an image of a child. I have no interest in hearing how you justify that to yourself. Yeah, you're not actually hurting anyone and for that reason I think you're entitled to do it if you want. However, I think it's still creepy and disgusting regardless. I've been through the whole debate before. I've heard all the semantics and justifications and I don't think any of it holds water. In any case, I don't really have any desire to hear it all again.
